Sightseeing Mandalay
Travel advisory: Both the US and UK governments warn against visiting. The US advises against all travel to Myanmar; the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many sites. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Sightseeing in Mandalay
Mandalay was the last royal capital of Burma. No attraction can currently be confirmed open, and the condition and access of each place below are unconfirmed since the March 2025 earthquake.
Religious sites
- Mahamuni Pagoda houses a gold-covered Buddha image that is revered across Myanmar. A building in the compound collapsed in the earthquake. Women and girls may not approach the image.
- Shwenandaw Monastery is a former royal monastery known for its wooden carvings.
- Kuthodaw Pagoda is known for 729 marble slabs surrounding a central stupa. Surveyors reported serious structural damage.
Historical landmarks
- Mandalay Palace was rebuilt after the original was destroyed in the Second World War. The 2025 earthquake damaged its walls and gates.
Cultural sites
- Zay Cho Market was known for handcrafts, textiles and local food.
- U Bein Bridge is a long teak footbridge at Amarapura, known for sunset views.
Practical notes
- Dress modestly at temples and pagodas, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Remove shoes before entering religious sites.
- Photography is restricted in certain areas.
