Spending Several Days in San Francisco
Several days in San Francisco splits naturally into the historic core, the park, the waterfront, and one trip out to Marin, in roughly that order.
Days 1-2: the historic core and the Embarcadero
Start at the Ferry Building Marketplace, then cross into Chinatown through the Dragon Gate at Grant and Bush, working north to Waverly Place and Ross Alley’s fortune cookie factory. North Beach, once home to the Beat poets, sits a short walk further, with City Lights Bookstore and the climb up the Filbert Steps to Coit Tower. Haight-Ashbury, the center of the 1960s counterculture movement, fills a slower second day, along with Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies.
Days 2-3: Golden Gate Park and the Bay
Golden Gate Park runs 1,017 acres from the Panhandle to Ocean Beach. The California Academy of Sciences and de Young Museum anchor the park’s cultural side; the de Young’s Hamon Observation Tower is free without a museum ticket. Book the $47.95 Alcatraz City Cruises Day Tour from Pier 33 well ahead, since summer sailings sell out three to six weeks out, and pair it with the sea lion colony at Pier 39’s K-Dock, resident since the 1989 earthquake. Day 4: Muir Woods and Marin
Every Muir Woods visitor by car or shuttle needs a pre-paid timed reservation at gomuirwoods.com ; parking runs $10, the shuttle $3.75 to $4.00 round trip, entrance $15 for 16 and up. Return via Golden Gate Ferry from the Ferry Building ($14, or $7.75 with Clipper); Blue & Gold Fleet’s Pier 41-to-Sausalito route has been suspended since May 2026, so this is the one way across by boat right now.
