Sri Lanka Multi-Day Trips: Culture and Trails
Two kinds of multi-day trip work in Sri Lanka: a seven-day culture loop by car, and a slow walking route through tea country. Pick the one that fits your legs and your month.
Route one: the seven-day culture loop
| Days | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Sigiriya | Sigiriya rock (US$35), Dambulla caves, Pidurangala |
| 3 | Polonnaruwa | Gal Vihara (US$30) |
| 4 | Kandy | Temple of the Tooth (LKR 3,000), lake |
| 5 to 6 | Nuwara Eliya and Ella | tea, Nine Arches Bridge |
| 7 | South coast | beach at Mirissa or Tangalle |
Use a car and driver, roughly LKR 18,000 to 30,000 a day. Heritage tickets are priced in dollars and paid in rupees, and the Cultural Triangle round ticket (valid 2 months, price set daily) is worth asking about at the CCF ticket page if you plan three major sites.
Reaching Ella. Drive from Kandy to Nanu Oya, about 3 to 4 hours, then ride the scenic train from Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla. Check Sri Lanka Railways for current services. Seats can be reserved up to 30 days ahead through the online portal , with a maximum of 5 per booking. Stay inside the carriage.
Route two: the walking route
The Pekoe Trail runs 22 stages over about 300 km through tea estates and colonial viaducts. Some stages have had storm re-routes, so check pekoetrail.org stage by stage. Add Ella Rock for a day.
Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) is climbed at night, only in its season from December to May. Outside the season the climb is hazardous.
Seasons and risks
The southwest monsoon covers May to September, so the south coast is wet then. The northeast monsoon covers October to January, so the Cultural Triangle is wet then. Hill-country flood and landslide risks peak from October to December, so keep your dates flexible.
Stays
Book the hill stop early, since good guesthouses in Ella fill up. Compare Ella stays on Booking.com when you have fixed your dates.
For shorter plans, the 5-day itinerary is a good start.
Getting about between stops
For short hops, red government buses cost LKR 30 to 100 and tuk-tuks LKR 200 to 500. The coastal second-class train from Colombo to Galle costs LKR 200 to 400 and runs beside the sea, which makes a pleasant final leg. Road journeys between regions are slow, so cap each driving day at about 4 hours and keep a spare half-day in case of rain.
Verdict: do the culture loop first and the Pekoe Trail on a return visit, in the cooler dry months.
