Trondheim’s festival calendar is small but worth timing around
Trondheim doesn’t run a year-round festival circuit; there are three fixed dates worth actually building a trip around, and the money angle for each is different: one drives up hotel prices, one is a straightforward ticketed concert weekend, and one runs on a much smaller local scale.
Olavsfestdagene: the one that fills every hotel room
Olavsfestdagene, also called Olavsfest, is Trondheim’s major cultural and church festival, held around Olsok, the 29 July anniversary of King Olav Haraldsson’s death at the 1030 Battle of Stiklestad, the event traditionally credited with Christianizing Norway. The 2026 dates are 28 July-3 August, with roughly 300 events across concerts, medieval markets, pilgrim walks, and exhibitions centred on Nidaros Cathedral and its courtyard. This is genuinely the single best week to be in Trondheim if the program appeals, and also the busiest and priciest: book a room well ahead, since Midtbyen and Bakklandet rates spike hard during the festival week. Verify exact future-year dates each year; late July is the fixed anchor.
Pstereo: Trondheim’s biggest music festival
Pstereo is central Norway’s largest music festival, focused on pop, rock, and electronica, held annually in August at Marinen, the green space beside the Nidelva next to the cathedral and Kristiansten Fortress. Running since 2007, it’s a standard ticketed festival weekend rather than a city-wide event, so budget for the ticket price directly rather than expecting free fringe programming around it.
Trondheim Jazz Festival: the smaller, older one
Jazzfest Trondheim (originally “JazzMazz”) is an annual spring jazz festival that has run since 1979, a collaboration among local jazz organisations, venues, and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. It’s a smaller-scale event than Olavsfest or Pstereo, spread across intimate venues rather than one outdoor site, and shoulder-season timing means hotel prices don’t spike the way they do in late July.
