Uruguay Attractions: Casapueblo, Fort, Museums
Sunset is the Casapueblo attraction
Casapueblo, the cascading white cliff house at Punta Ballena, is easy to spot from the road, and its best hour is dusk. The museum and terraces open daily at 10:00 and stay open until sunset. General entry is UYU 600, UYU 500 for 65 and over, and under-12s are free. The Ceremonia al Sol, a sunset reading over the Atlantic, is the draw, so arrive about 40 minutes early to find a spot. Opening details are on casapueblo.com.uy .
Fortress and park in Rocha
Santa Teresa National Park, on Ruta 9 at km 302, is free and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 08:00 to 18:00. Inside is the pentagonal stone fortress that Portuguese builders began in 1762, later taken by the Spanish. Entry costs UYU 50, and under-12s pay nothing. The grounds also have coastal forest and beaches, which makes it a full half-day out rather than a quick stop.
Montevideo’s museums
Palacio Salvo, completed in 1928, is the Art Deco tower that dominates Plaza Independencia. Guided visits climb to its viewpoint and the tango museum, with English tours on weekdays at 11:00 and 15:00. Confirm times and cost with the organisers at palaciosalvooficial@gmail.com .
The Museo de la Memoria, known as MUME, stands at Av. de las Instrucciones 1057 in Prado, in the former villa of the 19th-century dictator Máximo Santos, and documents the dictatorship years and the return to democracy. Check the museum’s own site for current hours, and allow a quiet, unhurried visit.
Museo del Mar in La Barra
Near Punta del Este, this marine museum has four halls with whale skeletons and shell collections. Hours and entry prices change by season, so confirm locally before driving out. It works well on a grey beach day, and you can find Punta del Este activities on GetYourGuide if you want an organised option.
Getting between them
Buses from Montevideo’s Tres Cruces terminal serve Punta del Este in roughly two hours, and tickets are sold through Urubus . Passenger rail is limited, so plan the coast by bus or car. Rental drivers on cashless tolls should check the Pase Turista rules for foreign plates at telepeaje.com.uy .
Paying
Card payments at restaurants and cafes come with a 9-point VAT cut, from 22% to about 13%, until April 2027. Non-residents also pay 0% VAT at hotels with foreign ID. Hotels and restaurants are where those savings apply.
Tip: do Casapueblo at sunset and Santa Teresa on a different day, since they sit at opposite ends of the coast. For ideas on pairing them, see Uruguay sightseeing .
