Eat the Veneto, not just Venice
Venice cooks the lagoon, but the mainland Veneto is where the region’s cheaper, heartier food lives, and every dish comes with a town to eat it in. Skip the naming of specific restaurants; in the smaller Veneto towns, a busy spot off the main square with a short printed menu is almost always the right call. Here is what to order where.

Vicenza: baccalà alla vicentina
Vicenza’s signature is baccalà alla vicentina, stockfish slow-cooked with onions, milk and cheese, usually served over polenta. It is peasant cooking done seriously, and a trattoria plate runs far less than a seafood dinner in Venice. Pair it with a local Soave or a Vicenza-area white.
Verona: Amarone country
Verona sits beside the Valpolicella hills, so this is red-wine territory: Valpolicella by the glass from around EUR 4, and the richer Amarone if you are splurging. The local plate to try is risotto all’Amarone, cooked with the wine. Verona also claims pandoro, the tall golden Christmas cake, if you visit in winter.
Treviso and the Prosecco road
Treviso is the usual claimant for tiramisu, and it grows the prized late radicchio in autumn and winter. Just north, the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene hills, a UNESCO site, are where Prosecco is actually made; a cellar tasting runs EUR 10 to 20 and beats paying tourist prices for a glass back in the city. You need a car or a tour to reach the vineyards.
The regional habit worth copying
Across the Veneto, the aperitivo hour and a spritz cost less than in Venice, and the set lunch menu is where the value is. Eat your big meal midday on a day trip and keep Venice evenings to a cicchetti crawl.
