Walking Trakai: Routes, Distances and Times
Trakai has no tour bus, no tram and no metro, so every visitor here is a walker whether they planned to be one or not. The number that decides your day is 2.8 to 3.0 km: the distance from the railway station to the castle footbridge.
The walk you did not plan for: station to castle
Trains from Vilnius stop at Vilniaus g. 5, at the southern tip of town. The Island Castle is 2.8 to 3.0 km north, a 30 to 35 minute walk up Vytauto and then Karaimų, past the lake on your right most of the way. The bus station at Vytauto g. 90 is a little closer, roughly 2 km, or 20 to 25 minutes on foot along the lakeside promenade. Neither is a hardship in July; in January, at minus 8 degrees with a bag, it is worth knowing in advance. Bicycles rent from the tourism centre at Karaimų g. 41, and LTG Link carries bikes from Vilnius for about €1.50 extra. Timetables and mobile tickets are on ltglink.lt , and the tourism centre has park maps, audio guide rentals and official guide bookings.
In peak summer, small electric shuttles sometimes run up and down Karaimų Street between the southern car parks and the footbridge for €2 to €3. That is a point-to-point lift for tired legs, not a tour.
Route 1: the peninsula spine, 3 km one way
Station to footbridge, which doubles as the whole town in sequence. You pass the Church of the Visitation on Birutės g., the Peninsula Castle ruins on Castle Hill, the Sacral Art chapel inside them, then the Karaim timber cottages along Karaimų Street with their three street-facing windows, the wooden kenesa at number 30 and the Seraya Shapshal Karaim Ethnographic Exhibition at number 22, finishing at the 300 metre footbridge. Allow 90 minutes if you stop to look, half a day if you go inside things.
Route 2: the Varnikai bog boardwalk, 4.5 to 5.0 km
The best walk in the district and free. Varnikai Botanical-Zoological Reserve sits about 3.5 km east of the castle; the circular trail runs through old-growth oak wood with trees over 200 years old and pine forest, then onto a 1.4 km elevated wooden boardwalk across the Ilgelis peat bog and its four relict bog lakes, Piliškės, Juodikis, Raktelis and Ilgelis. Ten illustrated boards and resting pavilions along the way. The boardwalk does not take pushchairs and cycling is restricted on the planked sections, so plan it as a walk.
Route 3: the Užutrakis shore, 5 km each way
Round the eastern side of Lake Galvė to Užutrakio g. 17, or across on a seasonal shuttle boat in about 10 minutes. The 18-hectare park Édouard François André laid out for Count Tiškevičius is open free all year, with 20 linked ponds, marble statues and parterres, and the best single view of the Island Castle from anywhere on land. The palace interior is ticketed and opens Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 19:00; uzutrakiodvaras.lt confirms hours.
Route 4: Hill of Angels, 4 km north
Up the Rykantai road to Būdos village, where more than 50 oak angels between 4 and 5 metres tall stand on an open ridge. Free, open at all hours, and almost never crowded. Walkable on the road shoulder, though most people cycle it.

Should you pay for a guided walk?
For the streets, no. Karaimų Street is legible on foot and the tourism centre rents an audio guide for less than a guide costs. For the castle interior, a guide earns the money: eleven exhibition halls of Grand Duchy material go past quickly without someone explaining what the 1410 Battle of Grunwald had to do with the ducal court. When walking here is difficult
From November to March the ground freezes and daytime temperatures sit between minus 2 and minus 8 degrees, dipping past minus 15 in January and February. The routes are all still walkable, but the boardwalk gets slick and the lakeside promenade takes the wind off the ice. May, September and early October are the comfortable months, at 14 to 20 degrees with a fraction of the summer crowds.
