What a Multi-Day Kharkhorin Loop Actually Costs
Before booking a 4 day loop or a 7 day expedition through Kharkhorin and the Orkhon Valley, know what actually drives the price: it’s the vehicle, not the itinerary length.
The three routes on offer
A 3 to 4 day Central Mongolia Steppe Loop typically runs Ulaanbaatar to Hustai National Park (wild Przewalski’s horses) and the Elsen Tasarkhai dunes on day one, Kharkhorin’s Erdene Zuu Monastery and Kharakhorum Museum on day two, then Ogii Lake or the drive back on day three. A 5 to 7 day Orkhon Valley and Arkhangai Heritage Expedition adds Tövkhön Monastery, Orkhon Waterfall, a nomadic homestay night and Tsenkher Hot Springs before looping back through Tsetserleg. A 10 to 14 day Grand Gobi and Orkhon Valley circuit combines all of that with the South Gobi’s Yol Valley, Khongoryn Els dunes and Bayanzag cliffs.
Where the cost actually comes from
A private 4WD charter, a Russian UAZ Furgon or a Toyota Land Cruiser with driver, runs roughly 200,000 to 350,000 MNT a day, depending on distance and fuel, which at late 2026 exchange rates works out to somewhere around 55 to 100 US dollars (1 USD is roughly 3,550 to 3,600 MNT; verify current rates before you budget). That single line item is what a 3 day loop and a 7 day expedition both pay per day; it barely changes with the itinerary. What changes is the number of ger camp nights, meals and entrance fees stacked on top, and those are comparatively small next to the vehicle cost.
The verdict
Because the daily charter rate is fixed either way, stretching a rushed 3 day loop into a proper 6 or 7 day trip that actually includes Tövkhön and Orkhon Waterfall often works out as better value per day than cramming everything into the shorter version and driving past half of it. The marginal nights cost far less than the first day did.

Everything here runs on MNT cash, and nearly all of it, camps, horse hire, drivers, only operates June through September; book a longer route in winter and you’ll find most of what makes it worthwhile closed.
