Where to stay in Gdansk without overpaying for the view
Gdansk splits into four real options, and the Main Town isn’t automatically the right call for every trip. Here’s what each area actually costs and who it suits.

- The Main Town / Old Town (Główne Miasto). Centred on Długi Targ and the Motława waterfront, the obvious first-visit base, everything on the main Gdansk guide is within walking distance. Expect roughly 280-450 PLN for a solid mid-range 3-star in season, less October through April. It’s also the liveliest at night, summer stag and hen parties can make some Old Town streets noisy past midnight, a real factor if you’re a light sleeper.
- Granary Island (Wyspa Spichrzów). The redeveloped former granary district directly across the Motława from the Old Town, home to the newest hotel stock in the city, some with river views. Pricing spans a wide range, roughly 340 PLN at a standard business hotel up to 600-750 PLN at a full-service property, generally quieter at night than the Old Town proper while still a 5-10 minute walk to everything.
- Near Gdańsk Główny station. Convenient if you’re planning day trips (Malbork, Toruń) or arriving/leaving Gdansk by train, and still an easy walk into the Main Town. Runs below Main Town pricing for a comparable room, the trade-off is a slightly less atmospheric immediate surrounding.
- Sopot. About 20-30 minutes from Gdansk by SKM (roughly 6.50 zł each way), Sopot is Poland’s classic Baltic resort town and its priciest, a deliberate splurge choice rather than a budget base. Worth it if a beach-town stay matters more than being inside Gdansk’s Old Town itself; the SKM makes commuting into Gdansk for sightseeing painless.
Is the Main Town worth the premium?
For a first visit, generally yes, since the Royal Way, St. Mary’s, and the Motława waterfront all sit within a 10-15 minute walk, and that convenience matters most on a short trip. For a repeat visit, or if quiet evenings matter more than proximity, Granary Island delivers a similar walk time for often the same or better value: compare current Gdansk rates on Booking.com across all four areas before committing to the Old Town by default.
Do you need to book far ahead?
Yes for May through September, and especially around St. Dominic’s Fair (late July into August) and the Shakespeare Festival, when Main Town and Sopot rooms both tighten and prices climb. Outside peak season, Gdansk rarely sells out completely, and the area near Gdańsk Główny almost never does.

Match the area to what you’re actually doing each day rather than picking on reputation alone.
