Edinburgh’s Free Sights Outnumber Its Paid Ones
Three of the city’s best attractions, Arthur’s Seat, Calton Hill and the National Museum of Scotland, cost nothing at all. The Royal Mile is free to walk. The only sight worth paying for without hesitation is Edinburgh Castle, GBP 23.50 online (about $32); everything else paid on this list is optional depending on how much of the budget is left.

Is Edinburgh expensive to visit?
Not if the free sights carry most of the trip. A day built around Arthur’s Seat, Calton Hill, the National Museum of Scotland and the Royal Mile costs nothing beyond food, roughly GBP 20-30 for meals and a pint. The expense comes from the paid extras and, from 24 Jul 2026, the new Visitor Levy on accommodation.
How much does the Visitor Levy add to a hotel stay?
Scotland’s first Visitor Levy, launching in Edinburgh specifically, adds 5% to the accommodation cost before VAT, for stays from 24 Jul 2026, capped at the first 5 consecutive nights. A GBP 100 a night room becomes GBP 105 during the capped period. Bookings paid before 1 Oct 2025 for stays after the start date are exempt. Full council guidance is at edinburgh.org .
Getting around cheaply
Lothian Buses run a flat GBP 2.40 single fare with no zones, and the same contactless card auto-caps at GBP 5.70 a day and GBP 26.50 a week. The Old Town core between the Castle and Holyrood is a 20 to 25 minute walk, hilly and cobbled, so budget shoes matter as much as budget fares. Current fares are at lothianbuses.com .
Book Edinburgh Castle skip-the-line tickets for the 30-minute slot before July and August availability tightens, and check Old Town and New Town rates on Booking.com before the August festival season triples them.
