Universal Studios Japan in 2026: A Bigger Park Than You Left Behind
Universal Studios Japan opened on 31 March 2001. For its 25th anniversary in 2026, the park has added new zones, launched a special anniversary parade (Discover U!! Version, running from March 4, 2026), and doubled down on its Japan-exclusive programming. The result is a park that has diverged significantly from its American counterparts and now offers experiences unavailable anywhere else in the Universal system.
The most significant recent addition is Donkey Kong Country, which opened in December 2024 as an expansion of Super Nintendo World. The new zone increased Super Nintendo World’s footprint by 70%. Its centrepiece is Mine-Cart Madness, a coaster built around a ride system that mimics the physics of a cart careening through a mine: banked turns, drops, and moments of controlled chaos that make it one of the more technically innovative rides currently operating at any theme park globally. The zone also added its own interactive wristband activities and themed food.
A Pokemon attraction is in development for USJ, targeting the space currently occupied by the Spider-Man ride. No opening date has been confirmed at the time of writing, but Universal has described the attraction as “innovative” and “immersive”, which in theme park language means a major investment.
The Tickets
USJ uses dynamic pricing. Standard admission for a single day in 2026 ranges from approximately ¥8,600 on the quietest dates to ¥10,400 on peak days. Tickets should be purchased in advance from the official USJ website or authorised resellers. There is no price advantage to buying at the gate, and on busy days the gate sells out.
The Express Pass allows holders to skip the standby queue for specific attractions. In 2026, with 25th Anniversary crowds pushing wait times for the top rides to 180 to 240 minutes on busy weekends, an Express Pass is not optional if you want to cover the main attractions in a single day. Express Pass 4 (covering four attractions) costs approximately ¥11,800; Express Pass 5 costs ¥12,200 to ¥18,900 depending on which attractions are included. Express Passes sell out before the date, sometimes weeks in advance. Book them simultaneously with your admission ticket.
Super Nintendo World requires a separate Area Time Entry Ticket (timed-entry slot), managed through the USJ app on the day of your visit. These are allocated by time slot from the morning and fill up quickly. Download the app before you arrive and have your park ticket linked.
Crowds and Timing
The park is busiest on Saturdays, Japanese public holidays, and during school holidays (Golden Week in late April to early May is the worst). January and September are the quietest months by a significant margin.
Arriving before the advertised opening time is worth doing: USJ sometimes opens 30 to 60 minutes early on busy days. Being at the Universal City Station exit by 7:30am on a day with an 8:30am advertised opening gives you a head start on the Super Nintendo World time slot allocation.
The 25th Anniversary programming running throughout 2026 means the park is busier than a standard year. Weekday visits in September or October 2026 will be significantly more manageable than any weekend from March to August.
The Attractions
Super Nintendo World is USJ’s most original land and, in my view, the best realised themed environment in the Universal system globally. The Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge ride uses a mixed-reality headset inside a physical track environment to create a ride experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere. The Yoshi’s Adventure ride is slow-paced and suitable for young children. The interactive wristband activities (tapping against targets around the land to collect virtual coins and fight Goombas) work consistently, which is more than can be said for similar systems at other parks.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at USJ is the most elaborately detailed of the three existing Wizarding World installations (the others are in Orlando and Hollywood). Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey runs inside Hogwarts Castle and remains technically impressive after many years of operation. The food and drink in Hogsmeade is better than at equivalent locations: Three Broomsticks serves a proper shepherd’s pie and the Butterbeer (available frozen or regular) is the same product as elsewhere but queues here are usually shorter. The Hogwarts Express experience at USJ connects Hogsmeade to a second area called London, replicating the Orlando original.
The original Hollywood area of the park (Jaws, Jurassic Park water ride, Hollywood Dream roller coaster) shows the park’s age in places but Hollywood Dream remains a popular coaster with an optional backwards-riding configuration.
Universal Cool Japan is the annual seasonal event featuring limited-time attractions based on Japanese anime and gaming franchises. In 2026, the lineup includes Detective Conan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Frieren. The Cool Japan events tend to draw substantial queues from Japanese visitors who would otherwise not visit a theme park, so their presence affects overall crowd levels.
Getting There
USJ sits in Osaka’s Konohana Ward, about 15 minutes from central Osaka by train. From JR Osaka Station, take the JR Loop Line to Nishikujo, then change to the JR Yumesaki Line (also called the Sakurajima Line) to Universal City Station. The journey takes about 12 to 15 minutes total. From Kyoto Station, the JR Special Rapid Service to Osaka Station takes around 30 minutes, then the above connection.
From Kansai International Airport (KIX), the Kansai Airport Rapid Service to Nishikujo and connection to Universal City takes approximately 80 minutes; fare is around ¥1,190.
A novelty alternative: the Captain Line ferry from Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan to USJ takes 10 minutes and costs ¥700 for adults. It is not faster than the train from most starting points but it is more enjoyable.
Where to Stay
The Park Front Hotel is a 1-minute walk from the main gate and books out months in advance for peak periods. Rates start around ¥20,000 to ¥25,000 per night. Hotel Kintetsu Universal City is 2 minutes from the entrance and offers rooms with park views from a similar price range. Both are official partner hotels and offer early park entry on specified dates.
Budget option: J-Hoppers Osaka Universal Hostel is 500 metres from the entrance, with dorm beds from around ¥3,500 per night and private rooms available.
Many visitors base themselves in central Osaka (Shinsaibashi, Namba, or Umeda) or in Kyoto and do USJ as a day trip. This is logistically sound and keeps more accommodation options and price points open. Staying in Kyoto adds 45 minutes of travel each way but gives access to better dining and one of Japan’s most significant cities.
Eating
Inside the park, the better themed food options are in Super Nintendo World (where the mushroom burgers and Piranha Plant Caprese are worth trying) and in the Wizarding World. The Hollywood area restaurants serve standard theme park food without the theming surcharge.
In Osaka more broadly, the Dotonbori district is 30 minutes by train from USJ and provides access to the city’s street food culture: takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savoury pancake), and kushikatsu (fried skewers) are all available in concentrated form along and around the canal. Osaka has a justifiable reputation for being one of Japan’s best eating cities, and a day at USJ followed by dinner in Dotonbori is a reasonable way to spend a full day.
One Practical Note
The USJ app controls several time-sensitive functions including Super Nintendo World entry reservations and table booking at some restaurants. Download it before you arrive in Japan and link your tickets immediately after purchase. The app interface is available in English, Chinese, and Korean in addition to Japanese.
Book Express Passes at the same time as your admission ticket, not as an afterthought: they sell out for the same days as the admission tickets.
