Which Zermatt lift is worth the money if you only do one?
Gornergrat , for most travelers. It delivers the single most photographed Matterhorn view in the region from an open-air cog railway, sits at a lower, symptom-free altitude, and costs the same or less than Glacier Paradise depending on season. Glacier Paradise wins only if the glacier itself, the ice cave, or the Cervinia crossing is specifically the point of your trip.
Are there truly free things to do in Zermatt?
Yes, and they’re not filler. Kirchbrucke’s Matterhorn view, the Hinterdorf quarter, the mountaineers’ cemetery, and the free village e-buses out to the lift base stations all cost nothing and together fill a genuine half day, before you spend a franc on a lift ticket.
Is the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing to Cervinia worth adding on?
Only if a day trip into Italy is genuinely part of the plan. It’s a separate, newer product from the base Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ticket, priced higher still (CHF 127.50-161.50 one-way), and eats most of a day between the multi-stage transfer and time in Cervinia itself; it’s a genuine extra, not a natural add-on to an already full lift day.
