Can you leave the island for a day? No. Nauru stands alone in the central Pacific. It has no neighbouring islands, no cays or islets, no ferries and no domestic flights. The closest land is Banaba, part of Kiribati, about 300 km to the east-southeast, with no scheduled passenger boat and no facilities for visitors. Tarawa and the Gilbert Islands are over 700 km away. Flights add another limit. With only a few departures a week on Nauru Airlines, a weekend break from abroad is not possible.

The island in two stories Almost everything to see in Nauru belongs to one of two stories. The first is the Second World War, when Japan held the island from 1942 to 1945. The second is a century of phosphate mining that stripped the interior and built the industrial shoreline. The island measures just 21 square kilometres, so every landmark below is a short drive from the others. Command Ridge This is Nauru’s highest point at 65 m (213 ft).

Setting expectations Nauru is not a honeymoon island in the Bora Bora sense. It has no overwater bungalows, no spa resorts and no wedding industry. The charm is different: a remote speck on the equator with few visitors, wide sky and ocean on every side. Couples who enjoy being somewhere few others go, and who can live with basic comforts, will find it memorable. Where to stay Menen Hotel sits on the cliffs of the east coast, high above Anibare Bay.

Dates come from the airline Nauru Airlines is the only passenger carrier, and it flies a few times a week. That sets the length of your stay. Most trips run for a long weekend of three or four nights, with a full week as the other common option. Look at nauruair.com for current flight days before you commit to anything else, then build the rest around them. Entry and money checklist Visa: required, arranged before travel, none on arrival.

What to expect Nauru has no amusement parks, no waterparks, no zoo, no children’s museum and no organised kids’ clubs. It is a small, quiet and remote island where the entertainment is outdoors and unhurried. Families who enjoy exploring, watching local life and keeping things simple will find enough to do for a few days. Families who need a packed schedule will not. Tide pooling on the reef flat When the tide is out, the reef flat dries for 100 to 300 metres from the shore, and the limestone holds shallow pools.

The short version Nauru has no commercial tour agencies and no ticketed attractions. Nobody runs a hop-on bus, and tour portals carry no Nauru products. Anything you do as a “tour” is a private arrangement with a local driver or guide, made in person and paid in Australian dollars cash. Finding a driver Start at the front desk of Menen Hotel, or ask at Capelle & Partner in Ewa, which runs a supermarket, a department store, a cafe and car hire.

At a glance Size: 21 square kilometres, about 12,500 residents, just 42 km south of the equator. Currency: Australian dollars in cash. Cards are not accepted. Nauru gives you a short list of things to do, and each one is quite unlike what other Pacific islands offer. Here is how to approach them.
