Think of Papeete as the junction of French Polynesia: aircraft, ferries and cargo boats all pass through, so a longer trip begins here whatever the final destination. Stepping stone one: Moorea The shortest hop is the ferry to Vaiare on Moorea, a crossing of about 30 to 45 minutes. Aremiti, Tauati Ferry and Vaearai all operate the line, according to the government transport office. Moorea can then be combined with other Society Islands, and in an Air Tahiti pass it has to sit at one end of the Society leg.

Three ways out of Papeete cover most day trips: across the water, along the east coast and around to the south-east tip. Each suits a different mood and budget. Across the water: Moorea Several operators sail from the Papeete ferry terminal to Vaiare, on Moorea’s east side. Aremiti, with its Aremiti 5 and Aremiti 6 catamarans, lists a tourist adult return fare of 4,700 XPF (2,350 XPF each way), a child return fare of 3,000 XPF for those under 13, and no charge for babies under 2.

This page follows a romantic day in order: afternoon, sunset, dinner and a quiet night away. The options are few but genuine, and they are all within reach of Papeete. Late afternoon: a spa Hilton Hotel Tahiti in Faa’a opened in late 2021. Its boutique spa and the largest pool in Tahiti make a relaxed start, and treatments can usually be arranged for two. Hilton’s announcement of the hotel is at Hilton .

Questions visitors ask most about walking in Papeete, answered in order. Is the city itself walkable? Yes. The centre is flat, and the sights sit close together near the waterfront. A loop could take in Place Vai’ete, Parc Bougainville, the Mairie de Papeete on Rue Paul Gauguin, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the central market. Go in the morning, drink plenty of water and wear a hat. At the cathedral, speak quietly and dress modestly, especially during Mass.

Papeete and its nearby coast fall into three themes: royal Tahiti, sacred and solemn places, and shoreline stops. Admission is free at nearly all of them. Royal Tahiti The Mairie de Papeete on Rue Paul Gauguin is described as a copy of Queen Pomare IV’s palace. Its public counter works Monday to Thursday from 07:30 to 15:30 and Friday from 07:30 to 14:30. About 7 km east of the centre, at Outu’ai’ai Point in Arue, the Tomb of King Pomare V stands in coral blocks with an urn on top.

Tahiti’s capital rewards a day built around three parts: early market, daytime museums and parks, and an evening at the waterfront food trucks. Everything below is priced in CFP francs (XPF), which are tied to the euro at 119.33 XPF per euro. Morning: the covered market Marché Mapuru a Paraita, the central market, runs daily and costs nothing to enter. Fishers, farmers, florists and craft sellers share the building, and the Sunday session begins around 04:00, long before the shops open.
