Suva Workshops: Lovo, Masi and Kava, Priced Out
Search “workshop” and “Suva” together and most results are recycled arts-and-crafts filler: pottery, watercolor, jewelry-making, the kind of class you could take in any city with a tourist board. Suva’s actual workshop scene is narrower and considerably more useful for a limited FJD budget, because the three things worth signing up for are things you cannot really learn anywhere else.
Lovo and Fijian cooking classes
The most practical workshop on offer teaches the earth-oven method Fijians use for Sunday feasts: wrapping marinated pork, chicken and dalo (taro root) in banana leaves, preparing palusami (young taro leaves soaked in coconut cream and onion), then slow-cooking the whole bundle over hot river stones in an underground lovo pit.
