2 Days: HCMC Day Trips on a Budget
Two days is enough for one real day trip from Ho Chi Minh City, and the Cu Chi Tunnels paired with Tay Ninh’s noon Cao Dai ceremony is the most efficient single day on offer. Day 1 is arrival and settling into District 1; Day 2 is the long day trip. Longer versions of this plan extend the same spine rather than replace it.

Day 1: Arrival and District 1 Settle-In
Fly into Tan Son Nhat (SGN), roughly 6-8km from District 1; a Grab into the city runs 110,000-250,000 VND depending on time of day. Check into your District 1 hotel and spend the afternoon and evening getting oriented: Ben Thanh Market for a first look, then a street-food dinner, com tam or banh mi, both under 65,000 VND. Save the sit-down city sights for a longer trip, tonight is about the flight and the pickup, not sightseeing.
Day 2: Cu Chi Tunnels and Tay Ninh’s Noon Ceremony
Leave by 7-7:30am for the Cu Chi Tunnels, 1.5-2 hours out; entry runs 90,000-125,000 VND plus whatever a shooting-range add-on costs if you want it. From Cu Chi, continue on to Tay Ninh to reach the Cao Dai Great Temple in time for the noon ceremony, arrive by 11:15-11:30am for a seat in the upstairs gallery. Entry to the temple is free. Expect to be back in HCMC by early evening, this is an 8-10 hour day door to door, so book a tour that bundles both stops rather than arranging two separate trips.
Is one day enough for both Cu Chi and Tay Ninh?
Yes, but only as a bundled tour, not two separate DIY trips. Cu Chi alone takes a half-day; Tay Ninh alone eats most of a day for one ceremony. Combined, a single 8-10 hour door-to-door day covers both because the two towns sit roughly along the same route northwest of the city. Trying to add a third stop the same day is the mistake worth avoiding.
Should I skip Cu Chi and just do Tay Ninh, or the reverse?
Skip neither if this is your only day trip. Cu Chi is the essential half-day war-history site; Tay Ninh’s noon ceremony is a genuinely unusual spectacle you cannot see any other time of day. Doing only one wastes the long drive out that both share for most of the route. If you truly only have half a day, Cu Chi alone is the safer single pick.
