Hanoi Day Trips: 2 Days on a Budget
Two days from Hanoi is too short for the Halong Bay overnight cruise, which alone needs two calendar days plus the drive, so this plan spends day one settling into the city on a budget and day two on Ninh Binh, the cheaper, closer trip that actually fits. Full cost breakdown for all six gateway trips lives in our Hanoi day trips guide .
Book these before you go:
- Hanoi hotels on Agoda , book central so the walk to the bus station or a tour pickup is easy
- Ninh Binh full-day tour on GetYourGuide , if you’d rather skip arranging the bus and boat tickets yourself
Day 1: Hanoi on a budget, city orientation
Land, change a little cash, and set up a Grab account before you need it, GrabCar from Noi Bai Airport runs 250,000-350,000 VND (about $10-14), a fraction of what the fake-livery taxis outside arrivals will try to charge. Check into a budget or mid-range Old Quarter guesthouse, then walk it off around Hoan Kiem Lake and across the red bridge to Ngoc Son Temple, 30,000 VND (about $1.20) entry. Eat where the plastic stools are full: a bowl of pho runs 30,000-60,000 VND (about $1.20-2.30), and a glass of bia hoi at the Ta Hien corner is 10,000-15,000 VND (about $0.40-0.60), among the cheapest beer anywhere. A full day of eating like this rarely tops $12. Want more city depth than one afternoon allows? Our 3-day Hanoi itinerary covers the Old Quarter and mausoleum complex properly.
Day 2: Ninh Binh, DIY or booked
Trang An and Tam Coc, “Halong Bay on land,” sit 1.5-2 hours south by road. Doing it yourself is the cheapest version: a standard coach bus from My Dinh station runs 80,000-120,000 VND (about $3-5) each way, and the Trang An entrance-plus-boat ticket, part of the Trang An Landscape Complex , UNESCO-listed since 2014, is 300,000 VND (about $11.50) per adult, Tam Coc’s is 250,000 VND (about $10). All in, that’s roughly $15-20 for the DIY version, against $35-89 for a bundled tour that also covers Hoa Lu’s ruins, the Mua Cave viewpoint climb, and lunch, and skips the hassle of finding the right bus and boat dock yourself. The Ninh Binh Tourism Department posts current Trang An boat schedules if you’re going the DIY route.
The 2 Day Plan at a Glance
| Day | Focus | Distance/drive time from Hanoi |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hanoi orientation on a budget | In the city |
| 2 | Ninh Binh (Trang An, Tam Coc) | 1.5-2h by road |
Is 2 days enough time for Halong Bay?
No. The standard Halong Bay product is a 2 day 1 night cruise that alone needs two calendar days, plus the 2.5-3.5 hour drive each way, so cramming a rushed Halong day trip into this plan means spending more hours on the expressway than on the water. Ninh Binh delivers similar karst scenery from a river instead of the sea, in a single day, without that compromise.
Do you need a car for either day?
No. Grab covers Hanoi, and a same-day return coach ticket handles the Ninh Binh trip for a few dollars each way. A rental only starts to make sense on a longer trip that adds Sapa or Mai Chau, where setting your own pace beats a fixed bus schedule.
Skip the rushed Halong Bay day trip on this short a timeline, Ninh Binh is the version of these 2 days that actually works, and it’s why the 3-day itinerary exists for anyone who can spare one more night.
