Hanoi Day Trips: 5 Days on a Budget
Five days from Hanoi is the 4-day plan , the Halong Bay overnight cruise plus Ninh Binh, with one more stop added: the Perfume Pagoda, a genuine half-to-full day despite sitting only 65-70km away. Everything here stays inside a 3.5 hour radius of the city, full pricing for every trip in this family is in our Hanoi day trips guide .
Book these before you go:
- Book a reviewed 2D1N Halong Bay cruise , lock this in first, it sells out fastest
- Ninh Binh full-day tour on GetYourGuide , or arrange the bus and boat tickets yourself for less
- Perfume Pagoda tours on GetYourGuide , so you’re not working out the boat queue system on your own
- Hanoi hotels on Agoda , book central since every pickup below collects from an Old Quarter address
Day 1: Hanoi on a budget, city orientation
GrabCar from Noi Bai Airport runs 250,000-350,000 VND (about $10-14). Settle into an Old Quarter guesthouse, walk Hoan Kiem Lake, and keep the day light before an early Halong pickup tomorrow. A full day of street food, pho at 30,000-60,000 VND (about $1.20-2.30) a bowl, egg coffee, a bia hoi nightcap at 10,000-15,000 VND (about $0.40-0.60) a glass, rarely tops $12.
Day 2: Halong Bay departure and the overnight cruise
Pickup runs 6:30-8am, then 2.5-3.5 hours down the expressway to the port. A 3-4 star overnight boat, the sensible mid-range budget pick, runs $125-160 a person and covers lunch, kayaking, and a cave stop. Skip any flash-sale listing that looks too cheap, a $35 advertised cruise ballooning into a roughly $400 final bill through padded extras is a documented pattern. Halong Bay, now inscribed with Cat Ba Island as one expanded UNESCO World Heritage site , sits in Quang Ninh province.
Day 3: Sunrise on the bay, then the ride back
An early kayak session or a last cave visit usually runs before breakfast, followed by disembarkation around 11-11:30am and the 2.5-3.5 hour drive back into Hanoi. You’re back by mid to late afternoon with the evening free.
Day 4: Ninh Binh, DIY or booked
Trang An and Tam Coc, 1.5-2 hours south, are the second landscape on this trip. DIY costs roughly $15-20 all in, an 80,000-120,000 VND (about $3-5) coach bus plus a 300,000 VND (about $11.50) Trang An entrance-and-boat ticket, or 250,000 VND (about $10) at Tam Coc, part of the Trang An Landscape Complex , UNESCO-listed since 2014. A bundled tour runs $35-89 a person instead and adds Hoa Lu’s ruins and the Mua Cave viewpoint climb without the DIY legwork. The Ninh Binh Tourism Department posts current Trang An boat schedules if you’re going the DIY route.
Day 5: The Perfume Pagoda, a multi-stage half day
Huong Tich sits about 1.5-2 hours by road to My Duc, then a 45-minute boat ride up the Yen stream, then a hike or cable car to the cave-temple complex itself. Combined entrance and boat tickets run 230,000 VND (about $8.75), the cable car round trip adds 260,000 VND (about $10), call it roughly $19 total if you take the cable car both ways. Book through a tour operator rather than working out the boat queue rotation yourself on a first visit, it isn’t obvious how the dock system works until someone’s shown you. The main pilgrimage festival runs mid-January to mid-March by the lunar calendar and brings the year’s biggest crowds and longest boat queues.
The 5 Day Plan at a Glance
| Day | Focus | Distance/drive time from Hanoi |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hanoi orientation on a budget | In the city |
| 2 | Halong Bay departure and overnight cruise | 2.5-3.5h each way |
| 3 | Halong Bay sunrise and return | 2.5-3.5h back |
| 4 | Ninh Binh (Trang An, Tam Coc) | 1.5-2h by road |
| 5 | Perfume Pagoda: drive, boat, climb | 1.5-2h drive plus a 45 minute boat leg |
Does the Perfume Pagoda really take a full day?
Yes, even though the distance on a map looks modest. The drive to My Duc is only 1.5-2 hours, but the boat ride adds 45 minutes each way and the climb or cable car adds more on top, so door-to-door this runs 6-8 hours once the return trip is counted.
What’s a realistic total budget for this 5 day trip?
Roughly $220-260 per person for activities and transport, not counting hotels or flights: about $12-20 for Day 1’s food, $125-160 for the Halong cruise, $15-89 for Ninh Binh depending on DIY versus tour, and $19-30 for the Perfume Pagoda’s boat and cable car.
Five days covers the closer half of what Hanoi has to offer as a base, the 6-day itinerary is where Sapa gets added.
