Day 1: Settle In Near Centraal, Spend Almost Nothing

  • Ride the NS train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal, about 17 to 20 minutes, EUR 6.20 to 7.10 tapped with contactless OVpay.
  • Book a base within a 10-minute walk of Centraal (see the booking link above); every day trip this week starts from the same platforms.
  • Register an NS Dal Voordeel account tonight if you’re taking this many train legs; the 40 percent off-peak discount needs a few days to attach to your OVpay card before it applies.

Day 2: Zaanse Schans, EUR 4.20 and Free to Walk

  • Buy the e-ticket in the NS app ; the ride from Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans takes 17 to 18 minutes, roughly 59 departures a day.
  • Entry to the open-air village is free; individual windmills, the cheese demonstration, and the clog workshop charge a few euros each.
  • Go before 10:30am, ahead of the tour buses.

Day 3: Haarlem, the Cheapest Full Trip on the List

  • NS runs Centraal to Haarlem in 15 to 16 minutes, roughly 140 to 148 trains a day, EUR 5.28 to 5.90 one-way.
  • Anchor around the Grote Markt; the Grote Kerk and the Frans Hals Museum are the two paid stops worth the entry fee.
  • This is genuinely a half-day. Be back in Amsterdam by early afternoon.

Day 4: Marken and Volendam, Run It Yourself

  • Take bus 316 from behind Centraal to Volendam, about 34 minutes, EUR 5.80 to 6.50 tapped with OVpay.
  • From late March through October, take the 30-minute ferry to Marken, EUR 10 one-way or EUR 16.50 return; outside that window, bus 315 covers the connection instead.
  • Eat on Volendam’s harborfront rather than saving lunch for back in the city.

Day 5: Keukenhof, or Kinderdijk Outside the Window

  • If your dates land 19 March to 10 May 2026, book Keukenhof online ahead: EUR 20.50 adult versus EUR 25 at the gate; the shuttle-and-entry combo from Amsterdam runs EUR 35 to 38.50.
  • Every ticket type needs an online reservation; there is no gate walk-up at any point in the season.
  • Outside that window, use this day for Kinderdijk instead, an Intercity to Rotterdam (about 40 minutes) then a WaterShuttle or Waterbus, entry EUR 18 to 19.50.

Day 6: Kinderdijk, or Zaandam Plus a Slower Zaanse Schans

  • If Day 5 was Keukenhof, spend Day 6 at Kinderdijk, a UNESCO-listed network of 19 windmills reached via Rotterdam and a WaterShuttle or Waterbus, entry EUR 18 to 19.50.
  • If Day 5 was already Kinderdijk, use Day 6 for Zaandam instead, EUR 3.50 one-way, 11 minutes from Centraal, for the Inntel Hotel’s stacked-house facade and the Czaar Peterhuisje, paired with a slower second pass through Zaanse Schans.

Day 7: Zaandam, the Cheapest Day of the Week

  • If Days 5 and 6 already used Keukenhof and Kinderdijk, close the week on Zaandam: EUR 3.50 one-way, 11 minutes from Centraal, one stop before Zaanse Schans, for the stacked-house Inntel Hotel and the Czaar Peterhuisje.
  • If Zaandam already ran on Day 6 as the off-season swap, spend Day 7 on a genuine no-spend budget close instead: a grocery-store picnic in Vondelpark or a browse through Albert Cuyp Market, cost EUR 0 beyond whatever you eat.
  • Either way, this is deliberately the lightest, cheapest day of the trip, not a sixth or seventh paid attraction stacked onto a week that has already covered five gateway destinations.
  • Head to Schiphol via the same 17 to 20-minute train you arrived on.

Is a 7th day worth spending on Zaandam rather than a sixth gateway trip? Yes, if the first six days already covered Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Marken and Volendam, Keukenhof or Kinderdijk. Zaandam costs EUR 3.50 and needs zero planning, a deliberate money-saving close to a week that has already spent enough on trains, ferries, and Keukenhof’s shuttle combo.

Is Keukenhof still worth booking first, even on a full week? Yes. It’s the only gateway trip on this list with a hard, unmovable window, 19 March to 10 May 2026, while Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Kinderdijk, and Zaandam all run year-round and can shift to any day of the seven without any real cost.

Do I need a Dal Voordeel subscription for a 7-day trip? It pays off here more than on a shorter one. At roughly EUR 6.35 a month (with early-2026 promotional pricing lower for the first three months), the 40 percent off-peak discount on weekday 09:00-16:00 and evening trains covers its own cost across a week with five or six train legs, provided it’s registered to your OVpay card a few days before you travel.
