Day 1: the Markt, the Burg, and the canals
The Markt is free to stand in, the Belfry behind it ticketed for the 366-step climb (verify current price and hours). The Burg next door holds the Gothic Stadhuis (begun 1376) and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, free to enter as a place of worship. Walk the canal quaysides to the Rozenhoedkaai, the most-photographed bend in the city, free the whole way. Lunch is a frituur cone of fries.

Day 2: Michelangelo, the museums, and the Begijnhof
The Church of Our Lady holds Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Italy in his lifetime; its own brick tower, 115.6m, is the third-tallest brickwork church tower in the world. The Groeningemuseum covers the Flemish Primitives, Van Eyck, Bosch, Memling. Minnewater and the Begijnhof, free and quiet, belong to the separate 1998 “Flemish Béguinages” UNESCO listing. Day 3: Ghent day trip
Ghent sits on the same rail corridor as Bruges-Brussels, cited at 25-30 minutes direct (verify current NMBS/SNCB timetable). Walk from the station to St Bavo’s Cathedral for the Ghent Altarpiece, Gravensteen castle, and the Graslei harbor front, all within a compact core not unlike Bruges’s own. Ghent shares the “Belfries” and “Flemish Béguinages” UNESCO listings with Bruges, so the architecture rhymes without repeating. Back in Bruges by evening for a final canal walk.

Getting around on 3 days: what needs booking ahead
Days 1 and 2 are entirely walkable, no transit needed beyond an optional bike rental (roughly €8/4h or €12/day, verify) for the ramparts windmills. Book your Bruges bed before the summer peak or a festival weekend, both push rates up fastest. Everything else on this 3-day plan runs cheap enough that timing your walk before the coach parties arrive, not the money, is what needs planning.
