7 days: honestly, Colombo is your base, not the whole trip
Colombo’s own sightseeing wraps up in a day or two, so a full 7 days spent only in the city would mean padding the schedule with repeats. This route is honest about that instead: one city-core day, four separate day trips (Galle, Negombo, an honest Sigiriya/Dambulla overnight, and Kandy), and a slow closing day. It leans on Colombo as a base the way most real trips actually work. Expect roughly $25-50 a person per day, more on the Sigiriya leg where an overnight stay adds a room. Only have 4 days? Day 1: Fort, Pettah, and Galle Face
Colombo Fort’s colonial core and the restored Old Dutch Hospital cost nothing to see. Pettah adds Sea Street’s gold shops, the Kathiresan Kovils, the 1749 Wolvendaal Church, and the candy-striped Red Mosque, all free. Gangaramaya Temple (roughly LKR 300, $1) and Seema Malaka next door (free, a 1976 Bawa rebuild) come with two enforced rules: never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and cover any Buddha tattoo. Spend the National Museum’s roughly LKR 1,200 ($3.60) if open, then close at Galle Face Green’s sunset food stalls.

Day 2: Galle by the coastal train
The Fort-to-Galle coastal train (roughly 1.5-2 hours) runs feet from the ocean most of the way. Galle’s UNESCO Dutch Fort is free to wander. Return by mid-afternoon.

Day 3: Negombo
About an hour from Colombo, Negombo’s fish market and lagoon make an easy half-day; close to the airport, so it’s also a natural stop if your flight timing allows folding it into an arrival or departure day.

Day 4: Travel to Sigiriya, honestly an overnight
Sigiriya is roughly 3.5-4 hours from Colombo, too far for a comfortable day trip there and back; this route treats it honestly as an overnight rather than squeezing it into a single exhausting day. Travel out in the morning, climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the afternoon or save it for cooler early morning light the next day, and stay locally overnight. The rock’s foreign-visitor entry fee is the priciest single ticket you’ll buy in Sri Lanka, so verify the current price before you go; it’s left out of the table below since it moves independently of everything else on this trip.

Day 5: Dambulla and back to Colombo
Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of five cave temples with Buddha statues and murals dating to the 1st century BC, is a short trip from Sigiriya. Visit in the morning, then make the roughly 3.5-4 hour trip back to Colombo in the afternoon. Its entry fee is separate from Sigiriya’s and, like that one, worth checking current pricing on rather than budgeting from memory.

Day 6: Kandy, a long but doable day
Kandy is roughly 2.5-3 hours each way by train; catch an early departure to make it a real day trip rather than a rushed one. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic runs roughly LKR 1,500 (about $4.50).

Day 7: Mount Lavinia and a slow finish
After 4 day trips, close the week gently: Mount Lavinia’s beach, about 10km south by local train or PickMe, is the cheapest way to end on sand. Use the afternoon for a real sit-down meal, Green Cabin’s lamprais (order ahead) or Upali’s by Nawaloka, before departure prep.

Getting around on 7 days
Day 1 is walkable, Days 2, 3, 4-5, and 6 lean on trains, generally the cheapest way to cover any of these routes, and Day 7 needs only a short PickMe or local train. Check the current poya calendar before planning any evening around alcohol, sales pause nationwide by law roughly 12-13 times a year. Book the Sigiriya-area room and the early Kandy train ahead of time; the coastal train and Negombo legs are easy to book same-day.
