Four days: Roskilde, Kronborg, then a different country
Four days fits three Denmark day trips plus a Copenhagen base, and the fourth stop crosses a border: Malmo, Sweden, is 35-41 minutes over the Oresund Bridge and prices in an entirely different currency. The 3-day version of this plan stops after Kronborg; the 5-day and 7-day versions keep adding stops on the same spine.

Day 1: land and settle in, spend nothing extra
Fly into Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and take the M2 Metro or a DSB regional train from the shared platform under Terminal 3 to Copenhagen Central Station, 13-15 minutes, roughly 36-40 DKK. Base yourself near the station; all three day trips ahead leave from the same platform. Spend the evening on the free stuff, a walk past Nyhavn’s canal houses costs nothing, and hold your budget for the trains and tickets over the next three days.
Day 2: Roskilde’s Viking ships and cathedral
Ride 25-27 minutes to Roskilde on a regional train, roughly 84 DKK one way, bought at the station or in the DOT/Rejsebillet app. The Viking Ship Museum (160 DKK adult) and Roskilde Cathedral, now 80 DKK adult after a price rise from 70 DKK took effect 1 July 2026, sit about 1.5km apart; walk between them or catch bus 203. Both fit comfortably into one half day.
Day 3: Kronborg Castle, Hamlet’s castle by legend only
The Kystbanen coastal train runs roughly every 20 minutes from Copenhagen Central, a 46-minute ride for about 78 DKK, then a 10-minute walk along the Helsingor harbor to the gate. Entry runs 135 DKK adult. The “Hamlet’s castle” nickname is a literary connection, not a historical one: Shakespeare set the play at “Elsinore,” the English rendering of Helsingor, with no evidence he ever visited Denmark. Day 4: Malmo, an entirely different country
Oresundstag trains cross the Oresund Bridge every 15-20 minutes, Copenhagen Central to Malmo Central in 35-41 minutes, one-way fares from roughly 150-160 SEK when booked ahead through Omio or the Skanetrafiken app. Malmo is in Sweden: a separate country, a separate currency, the Swedish krona, not the Danish krone, despite the shared “kr” symbol. Bring SEK or pay by card; some shops take DKK, usually at a bad rate. Random ID checks happen at the border even inside Schengen, so carry a passport. Malmo’s compact core, Lilla Torg and Malmohus Castle, is a genuine half-day trip, not a full one.
Is a guided Malmo tour worth it over the train?
Rarely, on price alone. A basic guided day trip from Copenhagen runs roughly $80-130 per person, while the DIY round-trip train fare lands around 300-320 SEK, about $28-32, for the same bridge crossing. A guide adds narration and a bundled Lund stop; it doesn’t add speed or access the train lacks.
Do you need to carry cash for Malmo?
Not really; Sweden is close to cashless, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. What you do need is awareness that DKK isn’t the local currency, so let your card handle the SEK conversion rather than assuming Danish kroner will be accepted at a fair rate.
Buy each day’s train ticket the morning you travel. All three routes run frequently enough, Roskilde and Kronborg multiple times an hour, Malmo every 15-20 minutes, that same-day booking costs the same as advance booking and lets you check the weather first.
