Seven days: all six Denmark day trips, one Copenhagen base

Seven days is enough to run every worthwhile day trip out of Copenhagen without repacking once: Roskilde, Kronborg, Malmo across the Swedish border, Frederiksborg, Louisiana Museum, and the free village of Dragor on your way to the airport. Day 1: land and settle in, spend nothing extra

Fly into Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and take the M2 Metro or a DSB regional train from the shared platform under Terminal 3 to Copenhagen Central Station, 13-15 minutes, roughly 36-40 DKK. Base yourself near the station; every trip this week leaves from the same platform. Spend the evening on the free stuff, Nyhavn’s canal houses cost nothing to walk past, and hold your budget for six days of trains and entry tickets ahead.

Day 2: Roskilde’s Viking ships and cathedral

Ride 25-27 minutes to Roskilde on a regional train, roughly 84 DKK one way. The Viking Ship Museum (160 DKK adult) and Roskilde Cathedral, now 80 DKK adult after a price rise from 70 DKK took effect 1 July 2026, sit about 1.5km apart; walk between them or catch bus 203. From May through September, the museum runs 50-minute sailing trips on ship reconstructions for an extra 120 DKK, weather permitting, the one Roskilde add-on worth booking ahead.

Day 3: Kronborg Castle, Hamlet’s castle by legend only

The Kystbanen coastal train runs roughly every 20 minutes from Copenhagen Central, a 46-minute ride for about 78 DKK, then a 10-minute walk along the Helsingor harbor. Entry runs 135 DKK adult for a genuine 16th-century Renaissance fortress; the “Hamlet’s castle” tag is literary, tied to Shakespeare’s “Elsinore,” not evidence he ever set foot in Denmark. Day 4: Malmo, an entirely different country

Oresundstag trains cross the Oresund Bridge every 15-20 minutes, 35-41 minutes to Malmo Central, one-way from roughly 150-160 SEK booked ahead through Omio or the Skanetrafiken app. Malmo sits in Sweden, a different country and currency, the Swedish krona, not the Danish krone, despite the shared “kr” symbol. Bring SEK or a card, and carry a passport for random border ID checks even inside Schengen. Malmo’s compact core is a genuine half day, leaving the afternoon free before the train back.

Day 5: Frederiksborg Castle, the grandest stop on this list

S-train Line A runs every 10-20 minutes from Copenhagen Central, 35-40 minutes to Hillerod, then a further 15-minute walk to the gate. Entry runs roughly 125 DKK adult and covers the Museum of National History inside Denmark’s largest Renaissance palace, moat and gardens included. Day 6: Louisiana Museum, art on a cliff above the sound

The same coastal line that continues to Helsingor stops at Humlebaek, about 40 minutes out with frequent departures, then a further 10-15 minute walk to the museum. Entry runs 145 DKK adult, 130 DKK student. Day 7: Dragor, then your flight

Dragor is a preserved 18th-century fishing village, yellow cottages, orange-tiled roofs, right next to Copenhagen Airport. Bus 250S from Copenhagen Central takes about 45 minutes; if you’re already at the airport with bags stored, bus 35 gets you there in about 20. There’s no major paid sight, just a wander-and-photograph stop that costs nothing beyond the bus fare, making it the easiest possible last morning before a flight.

Do all six of these day trips really need separate days?

Yes, if you want to see each properly rather than rush it. Frederiksborg and Louisiana in particular sit on different train lines in opposite directions and each wants 2-3 unhurried hours; combining any two of these six into a single day means cutting one down to a photo stop rather than a real visit.

Which day trip should you cut if seven days feels like too many?

Dragor first, since it’s the lightest stop and pairs naturally with a departure day regardless of how many day trips you’ve already done. After that, Frederiksborg and Kronborg are the two castles competing for the same royal-history slot; keep whichever fits your route better and drop the other.
