Delhi to Agra and Jaipur in 6 Days on a Budget
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in 6 Days on a Budget
Six days is a comfortable pace for the Golden Triangle: two Delhi days instead of one, a full day trip to Agra, and two real days in Jaipur instead of a rushed one. Moving by train the whole way (Gatimaan Express to Agra, Vande Bharat Express to Jaipur) keeps total transport costs under 3,000 rupees per person while a comparable private driver package for 6 days runs closer to 18,000 rupees for the car alone.
This plan nests the same route as the 4 day itinerary , just with an extra Delhi day and an extra Jaipur day added. If you have a full week, the 7 day itinerary adds one more Jaipur day on top of this. For just the Agra half, see the 2 day itinerary .
Book these before you go
- Check rates on Booking.com for two nights in Delhi, book near a Metro station on the Violet or Yellow line for easy transfers.
- Search Jaipur hotels for two nights, the old walled city or near Hawa Mahal puts you in walking distance of most sights.
- Book an Agra day tour if you want a licensed local guide at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort rather than going in solo.
Day 1: Delhi, New Delhi side
Start with New Delhi rather than Old Delhi so the first day is lighter on your feet. India Gate and Kartavya Path in the morning, Connaught Place for lunch, then the Metro out to Humayun’s Tomb (₹550 foreigner ticket) in the afternoon, the direct architectural ancestor of the Taj Mahal you will see on day 3.
Day 2: Delhi, Old Delhi side
Old Delhi is denser and more chaotic, worth its own day. Jama Masjid in the morning (free entry to the courtyard, ₹300 for a photography permit), then Chandni Chowk on foot or by cycle rickshaw, agree the fare before you get in. Stop at Paranthe Wali Gali for a stuffed flatbread lunch, then Karim’s for dinner if you skipped it earlier in the trip. Qutub Minar (₹550 foreigner ticket) makes a good late afternoon stop on the way back, the minaret’s interior has been closed to visitors since a 1981 stampede, so it is a ground level visit only.
Day 3: Agra day trip
Take the Gatimaan Express (train 12050) from Hazrat Nizamuddin station, not New Delhi Railway Station, departing 08:10 and arriving Agra Cantt at 09:50, AC Chair Car around ₹860. The Taj Mahal foreigner ticket is ₹1,100 plus ₹200 for the mausoleum, give it two unhurried hours. Agra Fort, 15 minutes away, is worth 90 more minutes for the view back across the river. Return on train 12049, departing Agra Cantt 17:35, arriving Delhi 19:30. Neither the Taj Mahal nor the Gatimaan Express operates on Fridays, plan around it.
Day 4: Travel to Jaipur
The Delhi to Jaipur Vande Bharat Express covers 293 km in about 3 hours 37 minutes, Chair Car fare around ₹1,050 with a meal included. Check into your Jaipur hotel, then spend the afternoon at Amber Fort , its Sheesh Mahal and elephant gate courtyard are worth 2 to 3 hours on their own.
Day 5: Jaipur, City Palace and the Pink City
City Palace and Hawa Mahal in the morning, photograph the Palace of Winds from the street outside around 9am before the crowds build. Afternoon in Johari Bazaar for jewelry and textiles, bargaining is standard practice here. In the evening, Nahargarh Fort above the city is the reliable sunset spot, arrive by taxi or auto since the road up is a real climb on foot.
Day 6: Return to Delhi
A morning Vande Bharat back to Delhi leaves the afternoon free. Use it for last minute shopping at Dilli Haat’s craft stalls or Khan Market, or a buffer against Delhi traffic if your flight is that evening. If you end up with an extra day beyond this plan, Rishikesh (about 230 km, roughly 3.5 to 5 hours by car) or Amritsar’s Golden Temple (best reached by a short flight rather than the 5.5 hour train) are the two most common Golden Triangle add-ons, both are a full extra day, not a bolt-on to day 6.

How far ahead should you book the Jaipur and Agra trains?
Book as soon as your dates are fixed. Indian Railways opens general bookings 60 days before departure, and popular trains like the Gatimaan Express and the Jaipur Vande Bharat Express sell out their Chair Car quota well inside that window on weekends and around festivals. Foreign passport holders can also book up to 365 days ahead under the Foreign Tourist Quota through IRCTC.
Is a private driver worth it for this loop instead of trains?
For six days, a private driver removes the need to plan around train times and lets you stop at Fatehpur Sikri between Agra and Jaipur, something the train route skips entirely. It costs more, roughly 18,000 rupees for the car across the trip versus around 3,000 rupees per person on trains, so it earns its price back mainly for groups of three or four splitting one vehicle.
Confirm your Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat Express seats through IRCTC directly, never through a stranger at a station offering a “special quota,” and buy Taj Mahal tickets ahead through the official ASI ticketing portal to skip the gate line.
