Varanasi’s old city is pedestrian. Cars and buses stop at Godowlia or about 1.5 km short of the temple, and the galis (lanes) beyond are for walkers, with e-rickshaws on the wider stretches. Five routes cover most of it. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar) and are approximate. Carry a zipped bag and bottled water. Route 1: Godowlia to the temple Walk the lanes from Godowlia toward Kashi Vishwanath, watching for cows and motorbikes.

The main sights of Varanasi sit in four clusters: the river and old city, the south around the university, Sarnath outside the city and Ramnagar across the water. Many are active places of worship, so go quietly, cover shoulders and knees, and take shoes off when asked. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar), and fees and hours change. Old city and river Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Corridor.

Most visitors give Varanasi between two and five days. That is enough for the river, the main temple and one outing, and with five days there is time for museums, silk lanes and a rest. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar). Train times and fees change, so confirm them before you commit. A long weekend, 2 to 3 days Day 1. Sunrise boat from Assi toward Dashashwamedh, or the free Subah-e-Banaras programme at Assi if you prefer to stay on land.

Varanasi is a pilgrimage city built around crowded steps, tight lanes and working temples, so very little is designed with children in mind. A family visit works best with short outings, early starts and a calm afternoon. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar) and are approximate. What suits children best Sarnath. About 10 km from the ghats, with landscaped grounds, deer and open space to walk.

Organised tours in Varanasi are mostly small, local and on foot or by boat. Big coach tours do not suit the old city, where cars and buses stop at Godowlia or about 1.5 km short of the temple and the lanes are pedestrian only. Tour buses cannot stop at any ghat. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar) and move often, so confirm each one directly.

A day in Varanasi runs on the river’s clock: dawn on the water, the temple in the morning, lanes and food at midday, and fire on the steps at dusk. This page follows that rhythm. The only travel caution is the usual one for India, which is to watch your bag in crowds and to ignore touts. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar) and shift often, so treat them as a guide.

Most walking in Jaipur means the old-city bazaars, but the more rewarding routes lead out of them: up a cobbled hill path at dawn, through a medieval village, and along the edge of a park where locals do yoga. Amer village and the stepwell Behind Amber Fort lies the old village of Amer. Walk down to Panna Meena Ka Kund, a 16th-century stepwell where criss-crossing staircases form a geometric pattern, and to the Jagat Shiromani Temple.

The trick with children in Jaipur is to follow the temperature: outdoors and hands-on in the morning, indoors and cool through the heat of the day, gardens and light in the evening. The stops below fall into that order. Morning: Jantar Mantar The observatory dates from 1734 and has 19 giant stone instruments, including a 27-metre sundial that reads time to two seconds. Children can walk between them and climb the steps.

Distance decides everything on a day trip from Jaipur, so the list below ranks them by the drive: one hour, two hours, nearly three. Anything beyond that needs a night away, and the last section says which ones. About 1 hour: Samode The village of Samode lies roughly an hour north of Jaipur. Its palace is about 475 years old, with a mirror-work Durbar Hall, painted frescoes and terraced gardens in Mughal style.

The best moment of a couple’s day in Jaipur is the quarter hour when the sun drops behind the Aravalli ridge and the old city lights up below the Nahargarh ramparts. Dawn and dinner offer two more. Dusk: Nahargarh The fort sits on the ridge above the old city and its ramparts look out over the whole street grid. Foreign adults pay about INR 600 to enter. Arrive an hour before sunset, carry water, and stay until the lights come on.

Tiger safaris at Ranthambore are booked up to 30 days ahead, and that single date often decides the shape of a Jaipur trip. The park, Pushkar and Agra each need a night away, so here is how to build around them. Ranthambore: one or two nights Ranthambore National Park lies about 180-200 km from Jaipur, a drive of 3.5-4 hours. Zones 1-5 reopened on 1 October, and the monsoon from July to September closes the core.

The ticket window at Amber is where most Jaipur visits are won or lost. Prices differ for foreigners, a composite pass exists but only covers selected sites, and guides, drivers and shop owners all compete for your time. Knowing the structure first makes any tour better value. How ticket tiers work State-run monuments charge foreign adults more than Indian citizens, a policy set by the Rajasthan government. From January 2026 the foreigner rates are about INR 1,000 for Amber Fort and INR 600 each for Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh and Albert Hall.

Three days is enough to see the best of Jaipur if you split the city by neighbourhood: the old city first, the northern forts next, then the hills and the gardens. Each stop below carries the current foreigner ticket price so you can budget before you go. First day: the walled city Begin at Jantar Mantar, the 1734 observatory with 19 stone instruments, where the foreigner ticket is about INR 600.

The city where the biggest sight is also the cheapest Amritsar inverts the usual travel-budget math. The single most famous thing to see here, the Golden Temple, costs nothing to enter, and the meal served next to it costs nothing either: the Langar produces and serves 100,000 or more free vegetarian meals a day, up to 150,000+ on festival weekends, to anyone who sits down on the hall floor, no ticket, no donation box, no exceptions by faith or income.

7 days covers the full holy-city-and-day-trips circuit Seven days keeps the 6-day itinerary’s full core, Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Partition Museum, Durgiana Temple, Ram Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort, Wagah, Tarn Taran, and Harike Wetland, then closes with a genuinely slow day rather than another ticketed sight. Expect roughly Rs 600-3,000 a person per day; the tables below break down where it goes. Day 1: the Golden Temple and Langar Settle in near the old city, then spend the afternoon and evening at the Golden Temple: the causeway loop, the Langar meal (free), and the temple lit after dark.

6 days adds a nature day trip to the pilgrimage-and-history core Six days keeps the 5-day itinerary’s Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Partition Museum, Durgiana Temple, Ram Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort, Wagah, and Tarn Taran Sahib days, then adds Harike Wetland Bird Sanctuary as a slower, nature-focused close.

5 days adds a real day trip to the core Five days keeps the 4-day itinerary’s Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Partition Museum, Durgiana Temple, Ram Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort, and Wagah core, then adds Tarn Taran Sahib as its own day, with a slower final day built around food rather than another sight. Expect roughly Rs 600-3,000 a person per day; the tables below break down where it goes. Day 1: the Golden Temple and Langar Arrive and settle in near the old city, then spend the afternoon and evening at the Golden Temple: the causeway loop, the Langar meal (free), and the temple lit after dark.

4 days adds history and a fort to the holy-city core Four days keeps the 2-day Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh core, then spreads Durgiana Temple, Ram Bagh, Gobindgarh Fort, and the Partition Museum across two slower days, ending on Wagah-Attari if the current border status allows it. Expect roughly Rs 600-3,000 a person per day; the tables below break down where it goes. Day 1: the Golden Temple and Langar Arrive at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) or Amritsar Junction and settle in near the old city.

2 days covers Amritsar’s holy-city core, on a budget Two days is enough for the Golden Temple, the Langar, and Jallianwala Bagh unhurried, plus a second day for Gobindgarh Fort and, if the current status allows it, the Wagah-Attari ceremony. Expect roughly Rs 600-3,100 a person per day depending on how much of the fort and border-side transport you add; the tables below break down where it goes. With more time on the ground, the 4-day itinerary adds Durgiana Temple and the Partition Museum on top of this exact core.

Where to stay in Amritsar on a budget, by area Golden Temple / old city, budget to mid-range: the most atmospheric option and the most practical for an early causeway visit. The SGPC-run pilgrim sarais, Guru Ram Das Niwas among them, offer free-donation or very low-cost dormitory rooms open to any visitor, not only registered pilgrims, alongside standard budget and mid-range hotels within walking distance of the temple. Ranjit Avenue / Lawrence Road, mid-range to upscale: the modern side of the city, with the best dining options and documented upscale properties including the Taj Swarna.

4 nature spots around Amritsar on a budget Amritsar isn’t a nature destination first, but a handful of spots offer a break from temples and museums without costing much. The Amrit Sarovar, free: the Golden Temple’s own sacred pool is the city’s original nature feature and the reason for its name; the water itself, not just the gold sanctum in it, is worth a slow look from the causeway. Ram Bagh gardens, free grounds: the Maharaja’s former summer garden, laid out in Mughal style with a hammam and corner watchtowers, is public parkland today; only the museum inside charges admission.

Amritsar has no real hiking, and no amount of searching changes that Amritsar sits on the flat Punjab plains, with no hills, ridges, or trails to climb anywhere near the city. What the city has instead, and what a budget day should plan around, is flat walking: heritage lanes, garden paths, and one sacred causeway, all free or close to it. Real hiking exists only much further away, in the Himalayan foothills around Dharamshala and Dalhousie (verify current travel time; well over 100km northeast via road).

7 hidden gems in Amritsar Most visitors walk the Golden Temple’s causeway, eat at Kesar Da Dhaba, and leave. These seven sit just past that path. Guru Ram Das Niwas, the SGPC pilgrim sarai: a donation-based dormitory inside the Golden Temple complex, open to any visitor regardless of faith, not only registered pilgrims. Most first-time visitors never realize they can stay here. The Central Sikh Museum: on the first floor of the main entrance, easy to walk straight past on the way to the sanctum, holding Sikh history including period art on Partition and 1984.

5 Amritsar festivals and events for 2026 Amritsar’s calendar runs on the Sikh festival cycle, and the Golden Temple is where almost all of it converges. Building a trip around one of these? See the 4-day itinerary for how the timing fits a longer stay. Baisakhi, mid-April (traditionally 13 or 14 April): the Sikh new year and Punjab’s harvest festival, marking the 1699 founding of the Khalsa order. It’s the temple’s biggest single day for crowds, kirtan, and Langar volume, but the date is shared with the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a heavier resonance worth knowing going in.

7 places to eat in Amritsar on a budget Amritsar’s food reputation holds up under scrutiny, and most of it is street-stall or dhaba priced. For where to stay near this food, see the stay guide . The Golden Temple Langar, free: dal, roti, and rice pudding on festival days, served to everyone seated on the hall floor. Simple food, and the one meal on this list worth having on principle alone.

9 things to do in Amritsar on a budget Most of what’s worth doing in Amritsar costs nothing beyond the effort of showing up early. This list leans toward experiences rather than tickets; for the sights themselves and what they cost, see the main guide . Watch the Golden Temple after dark, free: the gold sanctum lit against the black water of the Amrit Sarovar is, by wide agreement, the single best free thing to see in Amritsar, festival night or not.

Amritsar day trips on a budget: check Wagah first Every Amritsar day-trip list starts with Wagah, and every 2026 version of that list needs a line the older ones didn’t: the UK FCDO’s most recent update states the Wagah-Attari crossing is closed and advises against all travel within 10km of the India-Pakistan border. The evening ceremony itself has been suspended before during tension spikes, so confirm its current status locally before building a day around it.

Amritsar on a budget: what’s actually free Amritsar runs cheaper than most Indian pilgrimage cities for a simple reason: its single biggest sight costs nothing to see. The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), the holiest gurdwara in Sikhism, is free to enter, open roughly 24 hours, and welcomes visitors of every faith on the same principle that runs the Langar next door, the world’s largest free community kitchen, serving 100,000 or more vegetarian meals a day, up to 150,000+ on festival weekends, to anyone who sits down.

Three days is genuinely enough to see Jodhpur’s core on a tight budget, as long as Mehrangarh Fort’s ticket is the one real splurge and everything else stays free or near-free. Jodhpur is Rajasthan’s Blue City, an inland desert town on the edge of the Thar Desert, not Jaipur’s Pink City or Jaisalmer’s Golden City further west, and there is no beach here or anywhere nearby. Cash covers rickshaws and market stalls, cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants, and October through March is the season to book, cool enough to walk the fort ramparts at midday instead of hiding from an April sun that regularly tops 40C.

Four days in Jodhpur on a budget covers the whole Blue City core, Mehrangarh Fort included, in the first three days, then adds one real desert day trip, Osian or a Bishnoi village safari. This nests the same 3 day core sights, and the 5 day plan builds on this same spine with a second desert day. Book these before you go: Mehrangarh Fort tickets on GetYourGuide to skip the counter line, a Bishnoi village safari on Viator if that is how you lean for Day 4, and a budget guesthouse in Jodhpur on Booking.

Five days covers Jodhpur’s Blue City core on a tight budget plus two genuine desert day trips, so this route spends three days on the fort and old city and two on Osian and a Bishnoi village safari rather than inventing more in-city sightseeing that doesn’t exist. Jodhpur is Rajasthan’s inland Blue City on the edge of the Thar Desert, not a beach destination and not Jaipur or Jaisalmer, and October through March is the season to book: cool enough to walk the fort ramparts at midday instead of hiding from an April sun that regularly tops 40C.

Jodhpur is Rajasthan’s Blue City: a dense old town of indigo-washed houses stacked below the walls of Mehrangarh Fort on the edge of the Thar Desert. It’s inland, with no beach for hundreds of kilometers, and it’s not Jaipur’s Pink City or Jaisalmer’s Golden City further west, even though all three get mixed up. The good news for a tight budget is that India runs cheap by Western standards, and Jodhpur’s best sights lean free or nearly free.

2 days in Mumbai’s South Mumbai core, budgeted honestly Mumbai, called Bombay until the government renamed it in November 1995, is India’s largest city and its financial capital, and also its most expensive one. Two days here means the South Mumbai core done properly, not the whole city: the Gateway of India, a free heritage walk through the Fort and Colaba, Marine Drive, and the Elephanta Caves ferry if the calendar and the weather cooperate.

Two days of Mumbai on the cheap means walking instead of touring, riding the suburban train instead of a taxi, and picking one paid ticket for the whole trip rather than five. Day 1 costs close to nothing: a free heritage walk covers two of the city’s three UNESCO listings before lunch. Day 2 is either the Elephanta ferry or a genuinely free day built around a laundry, a market and an Irani cafe.

3 days in Mumbai’s South Mumbai core, on a budget Mumbai, called Bombay until the government renamed it in November 1995, is India’s largest city and its financial capital, and its most expensive one too. Three days is enough to cover the South Mumbai core properly and add a fuller half: the Gateway of India, a free Fort and Colaba heritage walk, Marine Drive, the Elephanta Caves ferry, then Dhobi Ghat, Haji Ali and a Bandra evening on Day 3.

Three days in Mumbai on a cheap-and-local budget means walking the free UNESCO streets twice, riding the suburban trains instead of taxis, and spending real money on exactly one ferry and one seafood dinner. This plan nests the two-day South Mumbai core (the free Fort and Art Deco walk, the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, street food) inside a third day built around Dadar, the Dhobi Ghat viewpoint and Banganga Tank.

4 days in Mumbai, the honest budget version Four days covers Mumbai’s honest budget core: two days of South Mumbai sights and the Elephanta ferry, a third day of Dhobi Ghat, Haji Ali and a Bandra evening, then a fourth day out in the northern suburbs for Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the Kanheri Caves, roughly Rs 4,550-11,300 total before flights. Want a different length? The 2-day and 3-day itineraries stay inside South Mumbai.

Four days of cheap, local Mumbai (formerly Bombay, officially renamed in 1995) means walking the free heritage core first, spending your one real ticket on the Elephanta ferry, then trading postcard sights for the city’s actual daily rhythm: a flower market, a laundry, a stepped water tank, and a train ride into the northern suburbs most visitors skip. Come October through February. Avoid the monsoon, roughly June through September, when heavy rain floods streets, delays trains, and stops the Elephanta ferry outright, so build slack into any of these days if you’re visiting then.

5 days in Mumbai, from the South Mumbai core to the suburbs Mumbai, called Bombay until the government renamed it in November 1995, is India’s largest city, its financial capital, and by common agreement its most expensive one too, though it still runs cheap next to a comparable Western city break. Five days is enough to cover the South Mumbai core properly, add the Elephanta Caves and a Bandra evening, push out to the Kanheri Caves and a Dharavi tour, and close with a cheap food and markets day.

6 days in Mumbai, the honest budget version Six days covers Mumbai’s honest budget core plus room to breathe: South Mumbai sights and the Elephanta ferry, a Dhobi Ghat and Bandra day, a suburbs day at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a full street-food and market day, and one cheap day trip out of the city by train or ferry, roughly Rs 7,000-17,200 total before flights. Want a different length? The 2-day , 3-day and 4-day itineraries stay inside South Mumbai and its nearest suburbs.

7 days in Mumbai, from the South Mumbai core to a day trip beyond the city Mumbai, renamed from Bombay by the government in November 1995, is India’s largest city, its financial capital, and by common agreement its most expensive one too, though it still runs cheap next to a comparable Western city break. A full week buys real depth: five days working through the South Mumbai core, the Elephanta Caves, Dhobi Ghat, Haji Ali and Bandra, the northern suburbs and a Dharavi tour, plus two more days out on cheap public transport, a train into the hills at Lonavala-Khandala (or Matheran) and a ferry across the harbour to Alibaug or Kashid.

Mumbai, called Bombay until the government renamed it in November 1995, does not need a big budget to see the best of it. Most of what makes this city worth visiting costs nothing: the harbor views, the UNESCO architecture, the trains locals actually ride. Below are 13 genuinely free or cheap things to do, no invented restaurant names, no rounded-up prices. Give the list 2-4 unhurried days, more if the monsoon forces a rain day indoors.

Mumbai, renamed from Bombay in November 1995, is India’s largest city and its financial capital, and it has a real reputation as the country’s most expensive place to travel. That reputation is only half true. A traveller who eats street food, rides the local trains and sticks to the free sights can get through a full day here for a couple thousand rupees. Add restaurants, taxis and paid attractions and that same day can cost three times as much.

Two days on the ghats: the budget version Varanasi is Hinduism’s holiest city, sitting on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh , and two days covers its core ghats-and-Aarti loop once: a free evening Ganga Aarti, a dawn boat past the ghats, and a Kashi Vishwanath darshan. Treat it as a spiritual visit, not a photo op, especially near the cremation ghats, where photography of pyres or mourners is forbidden. Price everything in rupees; the rupee sits at record lows through 2026, deep into the mid-90s to the dollar by mid-July, so check the same-day rate before converting anything below rather than trust an old number.

Four days on the ghats: the budget version Varanasi is Hinduism’s holiest city, sitting on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh , and four days lets the ghats-and-Aarti core breathe instead of rushing it: a free evening Ganga Aarti, a dawn boat past the ghats, a Kashi Vishwanath darshan, a heritage walk through the quieter ghats, and a genuine rest day. Treat all of it as a spiritual visit, not a photo op, especially near the cremation ghats, where photography of pyres or mourners is forbidden.

Five days on the ghats: the budget version Varanasi is Hinduism’s holiest city, sitting on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh , and five days is the version that doesn’t rush the ghats-and-Aarti core: two sunrise starts, a free evening Ganga Aarti and a paid boat-view repeat, a Kashi Vishwanath darshan, a heritage walk, and two genuinely slow days instead of one. Treat all of it as a spiritual visit, not a photo op, especially near the cremation ghats, where photography of pyres or mourners is forbidden.

The route Three days covers the essentials beyond the ghats on a real budget: one evening at the river, a Sarnath day trip, and a full day in the silk quarter and street food lanes. Add a 4-day , 5-day , or 7-day version if you have more time. Book these before you go A hotel near Assi Ghat on Booking.com A Sarnath half-day tour , if you would rather not haggle over an auto-rickshaw A Varanasi food walk , for the street-food stops narrated instead of guessed at Day 1: arrival and one evening at the ghats Fly into VNS (roughly 25km out, a 40 to 55 minute prepaid taxi) or arrive by train at Varanasi Junction, then settle into a budget guesthouse near Assi Ghat.

The route Four days is the 3-day route plus a full day across the river at Ramnagar Fort and a cheap guided heritage walk. See the 3-day version if that is all your trip allows, or the 5-day and 7-day versions for more slack. Book these before you go A hotel near Assi Ghat on Booking.com A Sarnath half-day tour A Varanasi food walk The Heritage City Walk on Viator , book the afternoon slot for day four Day 1: arrival and one evening at the ghats Settle into a budget guesthouse near Assi Ghat, a calmer base than the crowded Dashashwamedh core and still a short rickshaw from the evening aarti.

The route Five days is the 4-day route plus a genuinely free rest day: the BHU campus, the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum, and a quiet ghat walk away from the Dashashwamedh crowds. See the 3-day and 4-day versions for less time, or the 7-day version for more. Book these before you go A hotel near Assi Ghat on Booking.com A Sarnath half-day tour A Varanasi food walk The Heritage City Walk on Viator Day 1: arrival and one evening at the ghats Settle into a budget guesthouse near Assi Ghat, calmer and cleaner than the crowded central core and still a short rickshaw from the evening ceremony.

The route Seven days is the 5-day route plus two slower days, a bargaining-focused market morning and a real final day of rest before departure. See the 3-day , 4-day , and 5-day versions if a week is more than your trip allows. Book these before you go A hotel near Assi Ghat on Booking.com A Sarnath half-day tour A Varanasi food walk The Heritage City Walk on Viator Day 1: arrival and one evening at the ghats Settle into a budget guesthouse near Assi Ghat, calmer than the crowded central core and a short rickshaw from the evening ceremony.

Varanasi on a budget, beyond the ghats Varanasi runs cheap once you stop paying for what is free. The Ganga Aarti is free from the ghat steps, Kashi Vishwanath darshan is free, and the biggest cost risk here is not a ticket price, it is the silk-shop commission scam and the auto-rickshaw quote that triples for a foreigner. Price everything in INR, which sat near 90 to 97 to the US dollar through mid-2026 and moved fast, so check xe.

Varanasi’s sights ranked by what they actually cost Most of what people fly to Varanasi for is free: the ghats, the Ganga Aarti, Kashi Vishwanath darshan. The money in this city goes toward Sarnath, Ramnagar Fort, and the silk quarter, where a wrong step costs real rupees, an inflated Sarnath taxi, a commission-shop silk sari at 3 to 5 times fair value. Price everything in INR, which sat near 90 to 97 to the US dollar through mid-2026 and moved fast, check xe.

Two days based in Kolkata: the two cheapest gateway trips Two days is enough for the two closest, lowest-cost trips out of Kolkata: the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math temple pair on the city’s own edge, and Chandannagar, the old French river town about an hour further out by local train. Neither needs an early alarm, an overnight bag, or a train ticket over INR 20. Want more of these five trips?

Three days from Kolkata: two free stops plus one real train ticket Three days keeps Day 1 and 2 identical to the 2-day version , the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math pair, then Chandannagar, and adds a 3rd day for Shantiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore’s university town about 145km out. It’s the first trip on this list with a real train fare attached, roughly INR 150 to 300 each way, and it’s worth every rupee of it.

Four days from Kolkata: the full single-day-trip circuit, priced Four days is the full circuit of single-day trips before the Sundarbans math forces an overnight. Days 1 to 3 repeat the 3-day version exactly, the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math pair, then Chandannagar, then Shantiniketan, and Day 4 adds Murshidabad, the old Nawab capital, the furthest of the four at roughly 194km and the priciest single-day fare on the list. Book this one if the Sundarbans isn’t in your budget this trip; for that, see the 6-day or 7-day version instead.

Five days from Kolkata: 4 priced trips, plus an honest free day Five days repeats the 4-day version exactly for Days 1 through 4, the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math pair, Chandannagar, Shantiniketan, Murshidabad, then makes an honest call on Day 5 instead of forcing a Sundarbans package into a budget and a schedule too small for it. Even the cheapest 1 night, 2 day express Sundarbans tour, roughly INR 2,400 to 4,500, needs 2 full days you don’t have left here.

Six days from Kolkata: 4 cheap trips, plus the express Sundarbans Six days keeps Days 1 through 4 identical to the 4-day version , the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math pair, Chandannagar, Shantiniketan, Murshidabad, then swaps the 5-day version’s free day for a real spend: a 1 night, 2 day express Sundarbans tour on Days 5 and 6, roughly INR 2,400 to 4,500 per person. It’s the compressed package, fewer safari sessions than the full version, but it’s the single biggest line item in this whole plan by a wide margin over anything in Days 1 through 4 combined.

Seven days from Kolkata: the full circuit, priced end to end Seven days is the full circuit, and the one worth budgeting for properly if the Sundarbans is on your list at all. Days 1 through 4 repeat the 4-day version exactly, the free Dakshineswar and Belur Math pair, Chandannagar, Shantiniketan, Murshidabad, for a combined spend well under INR 1,800. Days 5 to 7 then give the Sundarbans the full 2 night, 3 day treatment it actually needs, INR 4,000 to 17,500 depending on tier, not the compressed express version in the 6-day itinerary .

Kolkata as a base: 5 trips and what each one actually costs Kolkata is the cheapest possible base for 5 real trips out of the city, and the costs split hard into two groups. Four of them, the Dakshineswar and Belur Math pair, Chandannagar, Shantiniketan and Murshidabad, run on ordinary train fares of well under INR 400 each way, sometimes under INR 20. The fifth, the Sundarbans, is the one genuine splurge on this list: a proper 2 night, 3 day package runs INR 4,000 to 17,500 per person, and any operator selling a cheaper same-day version is cutting the boat and lodge time you’re paying for.

Two days in Kolkata: the essentials only, cheaply Two days covers Kolkata’s marquee sights and nothing more: Victoria Memorial and the colonial core on day one, the free Motherhouse and Kalighat on day two. Skip any idea of a day trip; even Dakshineswar and Belur Math, technically inside Greater Kolkata, don’t fit without cutting something above. This plan runs on the metro (INR 5 to 30 a ride) and free walking, with one paid sight a day.

Three days in Kolkata: the core, plus North Kolkata Three days keeps the 2-day core , Victoria Memorial, the free Motherhouse, Kalighat, then adds a full North Kolkata day that’s almost entirely free: College Street’s book market, Kumartuli’s idol makers, and the Marble Palace. It’s genuinely the better version of Kolkata for the price, less packaged than another lap of Park Street. Longer trip? See the 5-day and 7-day plans. Day trips to Shantiniketan, Chandannagar or the Sundarbans live in the Kolkata gateway guide and its own itineraries, not here.

Five days in Kolkata: room to slow down Five days keeps the 3-day core , Victoria Memorial, the free Motherhouse and Kalighat, and North Kolkata, then adds a river-crossing day to Dakshineswar and Belur Math and a full day for markets and food you didn’t have time for earlier. This is enough time to stop treating Kolkata as a checklist. Shorter trip? See the 2-day plan. Want more still? The 7-day plan adds a slower South Kolkata day and a real rest day.

Seven days in Kolkata: everything, plus a real rest day Seven days keeps the 5-day plan whole, Victoria Memorial, the free Motherhouse and Kalighat, North Kolkata, Dakshineswar and Belur Math, a market day, then adds a slower South Kolkata day and a genuine day with nothing scheduled. This is the version for a visitor who wants to actually live in the city for a week on a budget, not just tour it.

Kolkata rewards a tight budget Kolkata is one of India’s cheapest big cities to see properly. A ride on India’s oldest metro system, running since 1984, costs as little as INR 5 (about 6 cents). Mother Teresa’s Motherhouse is free with no ticket of any kind. Even the marquee Victoria Memorial runs only INR 50 for Indian nationals, INR 100 for SAARC nationals, or INR 500 for other foreign visitors, a fraction of what a European capital charges for its best known monument.

Jaipur puts six real day-or-overnight trips within reach, and only two of them are actually cheap. Pushkar and Ajmer fit a single day for a few hundred rupees in bus fare or a shared taxi. Abhaneri’s stepwell and Bhangarh Fort cost nothing to enter and make up one more cheap day. Ranthambore, Agra and Delhi sit in a different budget category entirely: each is 3.5 to 5 hours away, each is best treated as an overnight, and the Ranthambore tiger safari alone runs roughly INR 3500-4200 ($36-44) per person per session, the single biggest line item in this whole family of trips.

Two days in Jaipur runs roughly INR 4000-5500 ($42-57) per person once you count entry tickets, food and a jeep up Amber Fort instead of the elephant ride, and it’s enough to hit the two things this city is actually known for: the walled Pink City and its two best hilltop forts. It is tight. You will not see Jal Mahal, Galtaji or the smaller bazaars, and the Composite Ticket’s value math is genuinely different on a 2-day trip than a longer one, covered below.

Three days in Jaipur runs roughly INR 5000-7500 ($52-78) per person across entry tickets, food and local transport, and it’s the shortest version of this trip where the Composite Ticket actually starts to pay for itself. Two days covers the Pink City and the two big forts; the third day adds Albert Hall, Jal Mahal’s free lakeside view and the Monkey Temple, the sights a rushed 2-day visitor never reaches.

Four days in Jaipur runs roughly INR 6500-9500 ($68-99) per person, and it’s the version of this trip that lets you slow down without adding a single overnight day trip. The first three days cover the Pink City, the forts and the museum-and-temple catch-up day; Day 4 trades checklist sightseeing for block-printed textiles, back-street bazaars and a real street-food crawl. Route summary and daily budget Days 1 through 3 match the 3-day itinerary exactly.

Five days in Jaipur runs roughly INR 8000-11500 ($83-120) per person, and it’s the point where the trip stops being a fort-and-bazaar checklist and starts including the city’s quieter corners: two Mughal-style gardens and Sanganer, the block-printing and handmade-paper town inside greater Jaipur that most 2 and 3-day visitors never reach. Route summary and daily budget Days 1 through 4 match the 4-day itinerary exactly. Day 5 adds the gardens and Sanganer as the softest day of the trip on both feet and wallet.

Seven days in Jaipur runs roughly INR 9500-14000 ($99-146) per person, and it’s a full week spent entirely inside the city, no Pushkar, no Ranthambore, no Agra. The first five days match the shorter versions of this itinerary; Days 6 and 7 add the local-life sights (a biological park, the everyday bazaars) and a deliberately light buffer day before you fly home. Route summary and daily budget Days 1 through 5 match the 5-day itinerary exactly.

Two days from Jaipur, on a budget, means picking exactly one trip and giving it both days: the Ranthambore tiger safari, roughly INR 3500-4200 ($36-44) per person per session, the single biggest cost in this whole family of trips. Skip Pushkar, Ajmer, Abhaneri and Bhangarh for now, one rushed safari session is a worse use of two days than two properly spaced ones. The 4-day version adds those smaller trips back in once the safari days are locked down.

Four days keeps the 2-day Ranthambore-only plan intact, both safari sessions first, then adds Pushkar and Ajmer by bus on day three and the free Abhaneri/Bhangarh pairing on day four, the two cheapest trips in this family stacked at the end once the one big expense is already paid for. Total extra cost for days three and four together runs well under INR 1000 per person outside a car or tour.

Five days keeps the 4-day plan intact, Ranthambore’s two safaris, then Pushkar/Ajmer and Abhaneri/Bhangarh, and adds one more day: the drive to Agra for the Taj Mahal at sunset. Foreigner entry runs roughly INR 1300 total, on top of everything else on this list. Five days buys the journey and one sunset, not the sunrise return the 6-day version adds. Book these before you go Ranthambore safari: reserve the overnight tiger safari on GetYourGuide Pushkar + Ajmer: book a day tour on GetYourGuide , or take the state bus Agra + Taj Mahal: an overnight Agra tour on Viator Agra hotel: compare stays on Booking.

Six days keeps the 5-day plan intact through the Agra sunset, then finishes the job: a sixth day for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, and the drive back to Jaipur. This is the version to book if the Taj Mahal is a genuine priority rather than a checkbox, thinner sunrise crowds and better light are worth one extra hotel night in Agra.

Seven days keeps the 6-day plan intact through the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort and the drive back to Jaipur, then adds one last trip: Delhi, the anchor of the classic Golden Triangle. This is the full loop, all six trips this base city reaches. Book these before you go Ranthambore safari: reserve the overnight tiger safari on GetYourGuide Pushkar + Ajmer: book a day tour on GetYourGuide , or take the state bus Agra + Taj Mahal: an overnight Agra tour on Viator Delhi hotel: compare stays on Booking.

Jaipur is one of India’s easiest cities to run cheap, once you accept one fact up front: as a foreigner you pay more than Indian nationals at almost every monument gate, and that is not a scam, it is official Rajasthan government policy, tightened again on 1 January 2026. Budget roughly INR 1500-2500 ($15-25) a day outside the paid sights, buy the Composite Ticket if you are hitting three or more monuments, and treat the free stuff, the Hawa Mahal facade, the bazaars, Patrika Gate, as most of your itinerary rather than filler between forts.

Jaipur is one of India’s more affordable big cities to visit, but it isn’t flat-rate: a day spent on bazaars and free viewpoints can run INR 300, and a day that includes Amber Fort or the Composite Ticket can run past INR 3000. As a foreigner you pay more than an Indian traveller at nearly every monument gate, official Rajasthan government policy tightened again on 1 January 2026, not a local scam.

Two days in Delhi: Old Delhi, then the free half Two days is enough for one paid monument on each side of the city and nothing else, so this plan spends day one in Old Delhi at the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, and day two on New Delhi’s free sights, India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb, and a Connaught Place walk. Skip Agra entirely; the Taj Mahal day trip needs its own dedicated day and doesn’t fit here.

Four days in Delhi: the paid monuments plus the free UNESCO pair Four days covers Old and New Delhi’s paid monuments in the first two days, then spends day three at Qutub Minar and Hauz Khas Village, and day four at two of the city’s genuinely free landmarks, the Lotus Temple and Akshardham. This is the 2-day plan with two extra days bolted on, not a different trip; if you’ve only got a weekend, start there instead.

Five days in Delhi: the monument route plus a real market day Five days takes the 4-day plan’s Old Delhi, New Delhi, Qutub Minar, and Lotus Temple/Akshardham route, then adds a fifth day built around Karol Bagh’s markets and Bangla Sahib Gurdwara’s free langar meal. Nothing from the first four days changes, this is an extension, not a rewrite. Figure Rs 2,000-3,200 a day per person across the trip. Day Focus Rough spend (1 person) Day 1 Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid Rs 1,800-2,800 Day 2 Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, Connaught Place Rs 2,200-3,500 Day 3 Qutub Minar, Hauz Khas Village, Lodhi Garden Rs 2,200-3,200 Day 4 Lotus Temple, Akshardham, Dilli Haat Rs 1,500-2,500 Day 5 Karol Bagh markets, Bangla Sahib Gurdwara Rs 1,000-2,000 Book these before you go:

Six days in Delhi: the market route plus a genuine slow day Six days keeps the 5-day plan’s full route, Old Delhi, New Delhi, Qutub Minar, the free UNESCO pair, and Karol Bagh’s markets, then adds a sixth day built around Purana Qila and the National Museum, deliberately lighter on walking than the first five. Nothing earlier changes. Figure Rs 1,800-3,200 a day per person, with day six the cheapest of the trip.

Seven days in Delhi: the complete route plus a real buffer day Seven days keeps the 6-day plan entirely intact, Old Delhi, New Delhi, Qutub Minar, the free UNESCO pair, Karol Bagh’s markets, and the Purana Qila/National Museum rest day, then adds a seventh day as genuine slack: a second food crawl, Khan Market, and departure logistics rather than one more monument. A full week in Delhi at this pace runs Rs 1,800-3,000 a day per person.

Delhi on a budget: what actually costs money here Delhi runs on dual pricing: foreign visitors pay roughly 15 times the Indian rate at monuments run by the Archaeological Survey of India, so a Red Fort ticket is about 500 rupees against 35 for an Indian national, not the number most blogs quote. Once you know that, the rest of the city is cheap. The Metro crosses town for under a rupee-a-kilometre, and at least 9 of Delhi’s best sights, two of them free every single day of the year, cost nothing at all.

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in 4 Days on a Budget Four days is enough for the classic Golden Triangle if you move by train, not car. One day in Delhi, one Gatimaan Express day trip to Agra, then the Vande Bharat Express on to Jaipur for the last two days. Total train fares run roughly 2,700 rupees per person for both legs in AC Chair Car, a fraction of what a 3 day private driver package costs.

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in 6 Days on a Budget Six days is a comfortable pace for the Golden Triangle: two Delhi days instead of one, a full day trip to Agra, and two real days in Jaipur instead of a rushed one. Moving by train the whole way (Gatimaan Express to Agra, Vande Bharat Express to Jaipur) keeps total transport costs under 3,000 rupees per person while a comparable private driver package for 6 days runs closer to 18,000 rupees for the car alone.

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in 7 Days on a Budget A full week is enough for the Golden Triangle at an unhurried pace, with three real days in Jaipur instead of two. The route is unchanged from the shorter versions of this trip, two Delhi days, one Agra day trip on the Gatimaan Express, then Jaipur by Vande Bharat Express. Total train fares still run close to 3,000 rupees per person, the extra days buy you time, not extra transport cost.

Delhi and Agra in 2 Days on a Budget (No Car Hire Needed) Two days is enough to see central Delhi and still day trip the Taj Mahal, if you use the train instead of a car. The Gatimaan Express covers Delhi to Agra in 1 hour 40 minutes for around 860 rupees in AC Chair Car, versus 4,500 to 6,500 rupees for a same day private car and driver. Book the train, not the car, and put the savings toward the Taj Mahal’s foreigner ticket.

The Red Fort costs about 500 rupees, and that’s the honest number Published prices for the Red Fort’s foreigner ticket range from Rs 500 to Rs 600 depending on the source, so budget Rs 500-600 and treat anything lower as a pleasant surprise at the counter. Indian nationals pay Rs 35, the usual roughly 15-to-1 gap at monuments run by the Archaeological Survey of India. Under-15s enter free, and a video camera permit adds Rs 25.

The Taj Mahal on a Budget: What It Actually Costs The Taj Mahal is not in Delhi, it is in Agra, about 230 km away, and the cheapest reliable way to reach it is the Gatimaan Express, which covers the distance in 1 hour 40 minutes for around ₹860 in AC Chair Car. Budget roughly ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 total per person for a full day trip from Delhi: train fare both ways, the foreigner entry ticket, local transport in Agra, and lunch.
