Day 1: arrival and one evening at the ghats
Settle into a budget guesthouse near Assi Ghat, a calmer base than the crowded Dashashwamedh core and still a short rickshaw from the evening aarti. This is the one day the river is the plan, watch the free Ganga Aarti from the ghat steps, arriving 30 to 45 minutes early. Day 2: Sarnath, priced two ways

Day 4: Ramnagar Fort and a heritage walk
Morning across the river at Ramnagar Fort, the 18th-century seat of the Maharaja of Varanasi. Is the heritage walk worth paying for on a budget trip?
Yes, once, on the day you are not otherwise DIY-ing the city. It runs roughly two to three hours from Assi Ghat through the old-city lanes to Manikarnika, with a guide supplying the history and etiquette context, including the cremation-ghat rules, that a self-guided walk skips entirely. Skip a second paid walk after this one, the ghats do not change day to day.
