Overnight and Multi-Day Trips Out of Mumbai
Trips of two nights or more from Mumbai follow three corridors. This page takes them in order of distance, with the closures and access rules that decide the plan. All fees are in Indian rupees (INR); several come from blogs or private sites rather than official tables, so ask on arrival.
East: Ajanta and Ellora (two to three nights)
The Buddhist caves at Ajanta and the rock-cut temples at Ellora are usually combined from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Closing days shape the order: Ajanta is shut on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. Entry at each site is reported at about INR 600 for foreign visitors and INR 40 for Indian visitors. The Archaeological Survey of India’s ticketed monuments page lists the ticketed monuments and is the place to look for the current figure.
To get there, the Vande Bharat from Jalna to Mumbai CSMT calls at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Its launch timetable showed about 6 hours 50 minutes of travel six days a week except Wednesday. Timings have been revised since, so check the National Train Enquiry System. A flight is the other choice.

North-east: Nashik and Trimbakeshwar (one to two nights)
Nashik combines vineyards with the pilgrimage town of Trimbakeshwar. Entry rules at the Trimbakeshwar temple are not settled: its trust has said non-Hindus may not enter the complex, while one guide says only the inner sanctum is closed to them. Do not count on going in, and defer to the staff. For vineyards, check each estate’s own website for tasting hours, since 2026 status was not confirmed for this page.
South and south-east: Pune, Lonavala and Alibaug
Pune
Shaniwar Wada and the Aga Khan Palace are the sights most often paired for a short stay in Pune. Hours and prices were not confirmed for this page, so check locally.
Lonavala
Lonavala makes a one-night base for the Karla and Bhaja caves. Karla was reported at about INR 300 for foreigners in 2023. October to February is kinder to walkers than the humid, wet months.
Alibaug
A night in Alibaug begins with a crossing to Mandwa. Wooden boats from the Gateway of India cost about INR 280 to 300, and speedboats about INR 600 to 800. The roll-on ferry from Mazgaon is reported at about INR 420, with three sailings a day. Passenger boats stop during the monsoon, so book a stay outside June to September. The operator’s site, M2M Ferries , is the place to check sailing times. The FCDO notes that most Indian beaches lack warning signs, flags or lifesaving equipment, so stay out of the surf.
Planning across all three
- Pack water, sun protection and shoes with grip for cave steps and fort paths.
- Allow a day’s margin at the end of the trip in the June to September monsoon.
- Confirm Monday and Tuesday closures before fixing dates.
