Guided Walks and Temple Tours in Varanasi
Organised tours in Varanasi are mostly small, local and on foot or by boat. Big coach tours do not suit the old city, where cars and buses stop at Godowlia or about 1.5 km short of the temple and the lanes are pedestrian only. Tour buses cannot stop at any ghat. Prices are in Indian rupees (INR, about 95 to the US dollar) and move often, so confirm each one directly.
Two local walking companies
- VaranasiWalks, based at B 1/229 near Assi Ghat. Its boat rides last roughly 1.5 to 2 hours and its walks 2.5 to 3 hours, and it also runs night walks and a Sarnath tour. Its site does not publish prices, so ask for the full cost in writing. Browse varanasiwalks.com for what is on offer.
- Roobaroo Walks, which leads heritage walks and takes small groups to the Subah-e-Banaras dawn programme at Assi, including a yoga session. Its dawn programme page explains the format.
River cruise
The Alaknanda cruise runs morning and evening trips from Ravidas Ghat, with bookings through alaknandacruise.com . One blog from early 2025 gave a starting price of about INR 1,000, though other pages mention anything from INR 700 to INR 2,500. Whether the cruise is running now is not confirmed, so look at the booking site before you build a day around it.
Heritage walk from Assi to Manikarnika
Many operators sell this as their standard route. If you take it, expect the walk to pass the cremation ground without entering. Manikarnika is a place of mourning, so no photographs of pyres, bodies or mourners, and quiet voices throughout. Turn down any stranger who offers a roof for a better view, since it nearly always ends with a demand for “wood money”. The area is part of a restoration project, so do not count on any particular access.
Temple tours
The trust that runs Kashi Vishwanath sells Sugam Darshan, a queue-skip ticket, at INR 300 per person, and that is the official option. A guide selling a “VIP” pass is a reseller and not the trust. Phones, cameras, gadgets and pens cannot go inside, and lockers are free. Foreign visitors with a valid passport can buy an INR 600 darshan ticket at the head-office help desk and must bring the original passport. At the gate, follow the staff about the sanctum. The trust’s FAQ lists the rules.
Sarnath with a guide
Sarnath lies about 10 km out and gained UNESCO World Heritage status on 25 July 2026. A guide adds the story of the Dhamek and Dharmarajika stupas and the Ashoka pillar remains. The museum, with the Lion Capital of Ashoka, opens 10:00 to 17:00 and is shut on Fridays. Entry fees are not confirmed, so ask what the tour price covers.
Questions to ask
- Is the price per person or for the group?
- How long is the tour, and where does it start and finish?
- Is a shop visit included? If so, skip it.
- Will the boats run? From July to September the district can stop all boats at short notice, and it last did so in September 2026.
