Amritsar Walks on a Budget: No Real Hiking Here
Amritsar has no real hiking, and no amount of searching changes that
Amritsar sits on the flat Punjab plains, with no hills, ridges, or trails to climb anywhere near the city. What the city has instead, and what a budget day should plan around, is flat walking: heritage lanes, garden paths, and one sacred causeway, all free or close to it. Real hiking exists only much further away, in the Himalayan foothills around Dharamshala and Dalhousie (verify current travel time; well over 100km northeast via road).
4 free walks instead of trails

The Golden Temple causeway loop
Walking a slow circuit of the marble causeway around the Amrit Sarovar, ideally before 9am, is the closest thing Amritsar has to a scenic walking route: water on one side, the gold sanctum ahead, and no elevation gain of any kind involved.
Old-city heritage lanes
The walled lanes radiating from the temple, Hall Bazaar included, reward an unhurried walk more than any single shop along them does. No fixed route, no fee, no hills, just narrow lanes and dense foot traffic.
Jallianwala Bagh
A shorter, solemn walk through the memorial garden’s paths, past the bullet-marked walls and the Martyrs’ Well. Not exercise in any real sense, but a legitimate walking stop on the same afternoon as the causeway loop.
Ram Bagh
The Maharaja’s former summer garden, now public grounds around the Ranjit Singh Museum, offers the closest thing to a park stroll in central Amritsar. The grounds themselves are free; only the museum interior is ticketed.
If actual elevation matters to your trip, treat Amritsar as the flat, walkable stop it is, and add Dharamshala or Dalhousie as a separate multi-day leg rather than expecting to find a trailhead here. For everything else nature-adjacent closer to the city, see the nature spots guide .
