Read this before booking any day trip. Jammu and Kashmir is a security-sensitive, disputed region, and the 22 April 2025 attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam was followed by a brief India-Pakistan military escalation before a May 2025 ceasefire (verify current status). The US State Department currently advises against travel to J&K, excluding Ladakh, and the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the region, naming Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg by name. This matters more for day trips than for staying in Srinagar city, since you’re moving through more open, less-secured ground. Check your own government’s current advisory first, book only through a registered operator or driver, and verify each destination’s current access status separately, especially Pahalgam, rather than assuming the whole region shares one status. Stay away from the Line of Control and border districts, and treat every trip below as for a well-planned, precaution-first visit.
Four day trips cover the range around Srinagar, from a genuine ski-resort gondola to quieter meadows most tour groups skip. Budget the vehicle as your main cost; the sights themselves are cheap once you’re there.
| Day trip | Distance / time | Main cost |
|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg | ~50km, 1.5-2hr | Gondola ₹740-1,800 |
| Pahalgam | ~90km, 2.5-3hr | mainly transport |
| Sonamarg | ~80km, 2.5hr | mainly transport |
| Yusmarg / Doodhpathri / Aharbal Falls | varies, quieter roads | mainly transport |
Which Day Trips from Srinagar Are Worth the Budget?
- Gulmarg (roughly 50km, 1.5-2 hours): home to the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable cars. Phase 1, Gulmarg to Kongdori, runs ₹740-810; Phase 2, Kongdori up to Apharwat at nearly 3,980m, runs ₹920-1,010; the combined ticket is roughly ₹1,800. Winter brings real skiing, one of the more serious ski destinations in the country, and summer brings meadows and a high-altitude golf course. Gulmarg has been reported fully open with stepped-up security since the 2025 attack (verify current status before you go).
- Pahalgam (roughly 90km, 2.5-3 hours): the Lidder valley and the Betaab and Aru valleys, with Chandanwari as the base for the Amarnath pilgrimage further on. This is also where the April 2025 attack happened, at Baisaran meadow just outside town. Pahalgam town’s general status and Baisaran meadow’s own reopening status are two separate questions, so verify each one directly rather than assuming one covers the other.
- Sonamarg (roughly 80km, 2.5 hours): the “meadow of gold,” with the Thajiwas Glacier as the main draw and the gateway toward Zojila Pass and Ladakh. A quieter, cheaper alternative to Gulmarg if you’d rather skip the gondola crowds.
- Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, and Aharbal Falls: quieter alpine meadows and a waterfall, all cheaper and less touristed than the big three above, and a solid pick if your budget or your day trip appetite runs to just one of these.
Arrange transport through your houseboat or a registered Srinagar travel desk rather than flagging a random taxi; splitting a shared vehicle across your group is the main way to cut the day-trip cost, since the gondola and entry fees themselves are small next to the drive. Browse organized Gulmarg gondola and day-trip tours or check Sonamarg and Pahalgam tour options if you’d rather have transport and a guide bundled together; check the current official travel advisory before booking either.
For the sights inside Srinagar itself that pair naturally with a day-trip day, see the things to do guide , and for quieter alternatives closer to the city, the hidden gems guide . If you want these trips built into a schedule, the 4-day itinerary adds Gulmarg, and the 6-day and 7-day plans work in Sonamarg and Pahalgam as well.
Verify Baisaran meadow’s status on its own before booking a Pahalgam trip that includes it; the town and the meadow are not the same booking decision.
