Mumbai Activities From Dawn to Dusk
Plan a Mumbai day around the city’s own routines: early fish landings, a cafe breakfast, the lunch-box delivery rush and an evening on the seafront. Money is the Indian rupee (INR), about 95 to the US dollar. The usual big-city care applies to bags and crowds, and the UK travel advice for India is the place for current official guidance.
Read this first: the sea and the monsoon
- Do not enter the sea at any Mumbai beach.
- Keep off the sea wall and rocks at Marine Drive and Worli at high tide.
- Between June and September, the city issues high-tide warnings; the civic body’s 2026 calendar flagged 24 tides above 4.5 m. Read the report on the schedule and stay back from the water on those days.
- Juhu beach was closed by police on 12 July 2026 after sewage and plastic washed ashore.
1. Sassoon Docks at dawn
The fish landing is free and busiest from about 05:00 to 08:00. Floors are wet, so wear enclosed shoes, and ask before photographing workers up close. A redevelopment is under way, so what you see may change.
2. Breakfast at an Irani cafe
Britannia & Co in Ballard Estate, open since 1923, serves a well-known berry pulao and is listed as trading; reviewers report that it takes cash only, and its hours are inconsistent. Kyani & Co, in the Jer Mahal building at Marine Lines, dates from 1904 per most sources and is still described as open, with bun maska as the order. Confirm both before a special trip.
3. Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat
View the open-air laundry from the bridge beside Mahalaxmi station, where a viewing gallery has been built. Entry is free. People live and work in the lanes below, so there is no unguided wandering at ground level.
4. The dabbawala rush
About 5,000 dabbawalas move about 200,000 lunch boxes a day, by recent estimates from secondary sources. Watch from the pavement near a big station in the late morning and keep the walkway clear.
5. A ride on the locals
Suburban trains carry around 7.5 million passengers a day. Ride off-peak, choose an AC or first-class carriage, never stand in the doorway and avoid the busiest direction at rush hour. Women’s compartments are available. The underground Aqua Line metro, fully open since October 2025, offers an alternative from Cuffe Parade to Aarey; unlimited-ride passes exist, and you should confirm the price at the station.
6. Marine Drive after sunset
The 3.6 km promenade is free, lit and open at all hours. Its Art Deco apartment buildings form part of a UNESCO ensemble listed in 2018. Walk the pavement and leave the sea wall alone.
Getting around
Taxis start at about INR 33 and autos at about INR 27 under the fares in force from 1 September 2026. Autos do not run in South Mumbai and operate from about Bandra and Sion northwards. Meters may be recalibrated until 30 November, so drivers may use a fare chart in the meantime.
