Mumbai Walking Routes: Fort, Colaba and Bandra
Five walking routes cover most of what Mumbai offers at street level, and one guided walk goes where visitors should not wander alone. The routes are ordered from the most walkable to the most specialised. Costs are in Indian rupees (INR).
When to walk
- Best months: October to February.
- Avoid the monsoon months of June to September for coastal routes, since pavements flood and the sea is dangerous at high tide.
- Carry water, wear shoes with grip and keep bags zipped in crowds.
Route 1: Fort and Kala Ghoda
Best for: colonial architecture in a compact area.
Flora Fountain (1864) is the natural start, and St. Thomas Cathedral (consecrated 1718) is a few minutes away. The Asiatic Society Town Hall, completed in 1833, is also on the route. In Kala Ghoda, Jehangir Art Gallery sits near the National Gallery of Modern Art, which opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with entry listed at INR 500 for foreign visitors on Incredible India .
Route 2: Oval Maidan to Marine Drive
Best for: the 2018 UNESCO Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble.
Victorian Gothic civic buildings face the maidan from the east, and Art Deco residential blocks look onto the sea from the west. Walk the pavements between them. Do not climb onto the sea wall or the rocks, and skip the stretch entirely at high tide in the monsoon.
Route 3: Colaba Causeway
Best for: a market walk with a short history stop.
The causeway sells clothing, accessories and snacks, and haggling is expected. Near the Gateway of India stands the Taj Mahal Palace, opened in 1903. Leopold Cafe, listed as trading, retains bullet holes from the November 2008 attacks. A quiet pause there is fitting.
Route 4: Bandra
Best for: street art and sea views.
Ranwar village and Chapel Road are known for murals. Residents have complained about photo-shoot crowds, so do not stage shoots, speak softly and stay out of private lanes. Bandra Bandstand offers a view of the Sea Link, where pedestrians are reportedly barred.
Route 5: Dharavi with a guide
Best for: understanding a working neighbourhood.
Visit only with a local guide. Reality Tours and Travel leads a 2 hour 30 minute walk from about INR 1,600, bans cameras and gives 80 per cent of post-tax profits to its charity. See its tour page for the booking details. Expect narrow lanes, low roofs and open drains.
Guided heritage walks
- Khaki Tours: heritage walks and jeep tours since about 2015, with no price confirmed.
- Mumbai Walking Tours: a walk of roughly 1.5 hours and 1.5 km inside CSMT, with the price not listed. The station is a working terminal and was attacked in November 2008, so move quietly.
Between routes
Taxis start at about INR 33 and autos at about INR 27, though autos do not run in South Mumbai.
