Couples in New Delhi: Sunset Gardens and Dinner
Evenings for two in New Delhi
Romance in New Delhi is mostly about light, gardens and old buildings. There are only a few dependable venues, so treat this page as a short list of places that are well documented, rather than a long catalogue. Costs are in Indian rupees.
Golden hour in a garden
Sunder Nursery is a restored heritage park next to Humayun’s Tomb, with lawns, water channels and Mughal-era domes. The entrance fee for foreign visitors is Rs 200. The gates close at 19:00 from April to September and at 18:00 from October to March, as stated on the official booking page , so winter visits should start by mid-afternoon. Humayun’s Tomb is open every day, and the stone glows in late light.
Lodhi Garden is free, with tombs from the 15th and 16th centuries beside long paths. It is lively with walkers at dawn and dusk, so go midweek for more quiet.
Dinner with a performance
Haveli Dharampura in Gali Guliyan, Old Delhi, pairs a Kathak dance performance, starting at 7:30 pm, with a chef’s tasting dinner at its Lakhori restaurant. Evenings run from Friday to Sunday and reservations are needed; see havelidharampura.com . The alleys outside are tight, so agree a pick-up point with the haveli before you set out and arrange a licensed taxi back.
A table near Qutub Minar
Olive Bar & Kitchen at One Style Mile, Kalka Das Marg, Mehrauli, is a restaurant there. Reserve and ask about opening times before you go. Pair it with an afternoon at Qutub Minar, since the monument closes earlier in the day.
Making a weekend of it
- Friday evening: Haveli Dharampura, then a taxi back.
- Saturday: Humayun’s Tomb in the morning, Sunder Nursery near closing.
- Sunday: a slow morning at Lodhi Garden before checking out.
Getting there and timing
The Metro reaches Humayun’s Tomb and Sunder Nursery through the nearby Nizamuddin and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium stations, followed by a short auto-rickshaw or cab ride. After dark, book a cab through an app rather than hailing one at the roadside, and share your route with someone you trust. Winter evenings from November to February are cool enough for an outdoor dinner, while the hot months from April to June suit late visits after the sun is down.
Notes
The choice of evening venues is limited, so book ahead. The Yamuna is polluted and unsuitable for boating or swimming, so plan around gardens and dinners rather than waterside outings. From mid-October to January the air is often poor; indoor dinners are the safer plan on bad days. Hotels and weekend packages can be compared on Booking.com .
