A 4-Day Djerba Itinerary on a Budget
Four days keeps the 2-day itinerary’s Houmt Souk and El Ghriba core, then adds a full beach day and Djerba’s paid attractions, Djerba Explore Park chief among them, plus the on-island Star Wars trail on the way out. Djerba sits outside every Tunisian advisory zone; the one incident worth naming is the 9 May 2023 shooting near El Ghriba Synagogue, a single, targeted event with no tourist-directed incident since, so expect routine, visible security there and nowhere else. If four days feels tight, the 5-day version adds a mainland desert excursion.
Book these before you go:
- Djerba hotel or resort ; the Zone Touristique’s verified all-inclusive chains are the Radisson Blu Palace Resort & Thalasso, Iberostar Selection Eolia, and Hasdrubal Prestige Thalassa
- Djerba Explore Park tickets or just buy at the gate, about 20 TND combined
Day 1: Houmt Souk and a Beach Afternoon
Morning. Land at Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE) and check in. Exchange money on arrival, the Tunisian dinar (TND) is a closed currency, and keep every receipt since only about 30% converts back on the way out.
Midday. Walk Houmt Souk’s covered souks and fondouks, free, catching the harbor fish auction if you’re up early. Climb Borj el-Kebir / Ghazi Mustapha Tower, about 8 TND, for the view.
Afternoon. Sidi Mahrès beach for the rest of the day, free and public.
Evening. Dinner in Houmt Souk; try brik, the fried pastry with egg and tuna, and Djerban fish couscous.
Day 1 cost: Borj el-Kebir 8 TND, everything else free beyond food.
Day 2: El Ghriba, Djerbahood, and Guellala
Morning. El Ghriba Synagogue in Erriadh, traditionally the oldest synagogue in Africa (current building 19th-century); dress modestly, and treat it as the living house of worship and UNESCO component it is, not a photo stop.
Midday. Djerbahood, the same village’s street-art project since 2014, around 150 artists and 300+ murals, free to wander.
Afternoon. Guellala pottery village, roughly 450 working potters, free; add the Guellala Museum, about 10 TND, for the heritage exhibits.
Evening. Dinner in Midoun or back in Houmt Souk; ojja (a spicy egg, tomato, and merguez skillet) if you haven’t tried it yet.
Day 2 cost: Guellala Museum 10 TND, everything else free beyond food.
Day 3: Full Beach Day and Djerba Explore Park
Morning. A full morning at Aghir or La Seguia beach, quieter than Sidi Mahrès and just as free.
Afternoon. Djerba Explore Park in Midoun, the Lalla Hadria Museum of Islamic art, a heritage village, and a crocodile farm (around 400 Nile crocodiles, feeding at 5pm), combined entry about 20 TND. If you’re visiting November through March, swap in Ras Rmel/“Flamingo Island” instead, a sandspit reached by boat from Houmt Souk with flamingos in season; verify the boat price before booking since it isn’t fixed here.
Evening. Fricassé (a stuffed fried-dough sandwich) or grilled fish for dinner, either in Midoun or back at your hotel.
Day 3 cost: Djerba Explore Park about 20 TND (or the Ras Rmel boat fare, confirm on the day); the beach itself is free.
Day 4: Midoun Market, the Star Wars Trail, and Departure
Morning. If your last day lands on a Friday, catch Midoun’s weekly market, free to browse for spices and crafts; any other day, spend the morning back in Houmt Souk’s souks instead.
Midday. The on-island Star Wars trail near Ajim: the former-bakery Mos Eisley Cantina exterior, the Amghar Mosque (Obi-Wan’s house exterior), and the Sidi Jmour spaceport shots, three free roadside stops. (The cantina’s actual interior was filmed in London, and Luke’s home interior plus the Mos Espa set are mainland day trips, not here.)
Afternoon. One last beach hour, then transfer to Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE) for departure.
Day 4 cost: Free, beyond food and your transfer.
Across four days, the only entrance fees you’ll actually pay are the fort (8 TND), the museum (10 TND), and Djerba Explore Park (about 20 TND), roughly 38 TND total for everything ticketed on the island. Keep your day-one exchange receipt the whole trip; you’ll need it to convert any leftover dinars at the airport. For a longer beach-anchored week, see the 5-day , 6-day , and 7-day versions, or the full Djerba guide for everything free and cheap on the island.
