Tunisia in 6 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)

The route

Six days is close to the full country: Tunis and Carthage in the north, Kairouan and the Sousse coast in the centre, then south to Djerba and across to Tozeur for the desert. Price everything in Tunisian dinar, TND, roughly 2.96 to the US dollar in 2026. The dinar is a closed currency, you cannot buy it before you land, so change cash on arrival (airport counter or bank, never a street changer) and keep every receipt in case you reconvert leftovers at departure. The whole route sits outside the Level 4 “do not travel” zones the US State Department flags, those are remote interior and Libya-border areas, not this loop. If the desert days matter to you, go October to April, the south runs 40C plus in summer. Day 1: Tunis and the Bardo mosaics

Base yourself in or near the Medina, a guesthouse bed here runs cheaper than a hotel near the new town. Walk the souks (bargaining is normal, start low), see the Zitouna Mosque’s courtyard from the doorway if you are not Muslim, then cross town for the Bardo National Museum’s mosaic collection, reopened since September 2023, entry roughly 15-30 TND depending which tier you are charged. A metered taxi from Tunis-Carthage airport into town should run 10-15 TND, insist on the meter, the “it’s broken” routine is the standard overcharge here.

Day 2: Carthage and Sidi Bou Said

Carthage is a Tunis suburb, not a separate city, reach it on the TGM light rail for under 1 TND. The combined multi-site pass (the Antonine Baths, Byrsa Hill and its museum, the Tophet, the Punic Ports, the Roman theatre and villas, the amphitheatre) runs roughly 30 TND and covers all seven zones. Stay on the TGM for Sidi Bou Said, the blue-and-white clifftop village costs nothing to walk, only the café view over the bay has a price, roughly 2-6 TND for mint tea. Day 3: Kairouan

A louage or SNTRI bus from Tunis to Kairouan takes roughly 2 hours. The Great Mosque is traditionally cited as Islam’s fourth-holiest site, non-Muslims can view the courtyard and look into the prayer hall from the doorway, modest dress is enforced, cover shoulders and knees. A combined monuments ticket runs roughly 12 TND, and the mosque itself keeps short hours, closer to 8am-2pm, so visit in the morning. See UNESCO’s Kairouan medina listing .

Day 4: El Jem and the Sousse coast

Continue toward the coast via El Jem, roughly on the Sousse-Sfax rail line and worth the stop for the amphitheatre alone, one of the best preserved anywhere, built to seat 35,000. Entry runs roughly 12 TND non-resident, 8 TND resident, 5 TND student with ID. From there it’s a short run to Sousse or Monastir, linked by the Sahel Metro, for the ribat, the medina, and an afternoon on the beach. Day 5: Djerba over the causeway, then Matmata

South to Djerba is the longest transfer of the trip so far, figure most of a day by louage or bus from the Sousse coast. The island connects to the mainland over the El Kantara causeway near Zarzis, a modernized Roman-era stone crossing with no ferry and no toll, any bus or louage uses it same as a car. Spend the afternoon in Houmt Souk’s lanes and pottery stalls. The El Ghriba Synagogue is worth seeing and worth one honest note: a 2023 attack near the site killed five people during the annual pilgrimage, which has continued since under visibly tighter security. Matmata, whose underground Hotel Sidi Driss doubled as the Lars family home in the original Star Wars films, is an easy detour from Djerba, a budget cave room there runs roughly 40-80 TND.

Day 6: Tozeur, Chott el Djerid and the Star Wars sites

Matmata to Tozeur is a genuine desert haul, and this is the one day the flight-versus-road math is worth doing. Driving or stringing together louages from the south eats most of a day; the Tunis-Tozeur domestic flight runs about 1h10, with only a handful of departures a week outside winter, and it buys back most of that day if your loop can swing through Tunis first. Either way, the payoff is one bundled desert day: the white expanse of the Chott el Djerid salt flat, then the Mos Espa film set and the Ong Jemel rock outcrop nearby, usually sold together as a single 4x4 tour. Book that ahead rather than arranging it cold at the hotel desk.

Is the causeway crossing into Djerba something you can do without a car?

Yes. The El Kantara causeway runs about 7km with no ferry and no fare, and every louage and bus on this route crosses it the same as a private car would. The alternative is the Jorf-Ajim car ferry on the island’s north-west side, roughly a 15-minute crossing running every 20 minutes or so, useful only if you are approaching from that direction instead.

Is this loop actually safe?

The US State Department rates Tunisia Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” and reserves its Level 4 “do not travel” rating for specific interior zones near the Algeria border and the deep south near Libya, not this route. The 2015 Bardo and Sousse beach attacks and the 2023 Djerba synagogue attack are real and worth knowing as history; tourism security has visibly tightened since, and none of the three point to elevated risk on the Tunis-Kairouan-Sousse-Djerba-Tozeur circuit today. The current advisory is worth a check before you fly. The everyday risk is duller: agree taxi fares up front and wave off unsolicited “guides” who attach themselves to you in the medinas.

How much does 6 days actually cost?

Budget travelers should expect roughly 60-110 TND a day for a guesthouse bed, local meals (8-15 TND a plate), and louage fares, with site tickets adding another 10-30 TND on museum or ruin days. Build in extra for the Day 5-6 desert leg and any Djerba-Tozeur time saved by flying, both push a single day well past the daily average below.
