Six days is enough for a genuine RN7 push, Tana to Antsirabe to Ranomafana to Isalo, but not enough to also fit the Andasibe indri detour; that branch heads east on the RN2 while the RN7 heads south, and combining both means backtracking through Tana and losing a full day to driving you’ve already done. Day 1: Antananarivo, for Free
Land at Ivato, transfer into the city, and spend the afternoon on the Rova hill and through Analakely Market, both free, the last easy budget day before six days of driving and park fees. Early night, the RN7 push starts tomorrow.
Day 2: Antsirabe by Taxi-Brousse
Taxi-brousse south on the paved RN7, about 3.5 hours, a fraction of what a hired car costs for the same route. Afternoon pousse-pousse ride and a zebu-horn or gemstone workshop stop, both cheap to browse. Overnight at a budget guesthouse in Antsirabe.
Day 3: On to Ranomafana
The single longest leg of the trip, roughly 6 hours on the RN7 from Antsirabe to Ranomafana. Taxi-brousse technically covers this route, but the schedule is unreliable enough on a long remote leg that splitting a shared 4x4 and driver-guide with one or two other travelers is the more realistic budget move here, not a splurge. Arrive by early evening and check into a lodge at the park edge.
Day 4: Ranomafana National Park
Full-day rainforest circuit with a mandatory MNP guide, confirm current entrance and guide fees at parcs-madagascar.com since Ranomafana’s figures conflict across sources. This is golden bamboo lemur territory, the species whose 1986 discovery led directly to the park’s 1991 founding, alongside 12 other lemur species. Evening back at the lodge, an early night ahead of tomorrow’s drive.
Day 5: Ranomafana to Isalo
Drive south on the RN7 toward Isalo, about 3 hours, via a stop at Anja Community Reserve near Ambalavao, a community-run reserve (not an MNP park) with the country’s highest concentration of ring-tailed lemurs and a noticeably cheaper entrance fee, roughly 8,000-25,000 MGA plus a modest community guide fee. Afternoon arrival at Isalo, overnight near the park.
Day 6: Isalo, Then the Flight Home
Morning circuit at Isalo National Park , the Canyon des Singes and the Piscine Naturelle, a natural spring-fed pool, are the two headline stops; ring-tailed lemurs and sifakas are common along the trail. Afternoon transfer to Toliara, then a Madagascar Airlines flight back to Tana, roughly 1h30, rather than redriving the full RN7. Depart from Ivato that evening or the next morning depending on your connection.
Is the Toliara-Tana flight worth the extra cost on a budget trip?
Usually, yes. The fare costs more than the equivalent taxi-brousse fare would, but redriving the RN7 backward eats 2 or more extra travel days you’d otherwise spend at home or on a longer trip. If cash is scarcer than time for you, the RN7 north by taxi-brousse is possible, just budget an extra 2-3 days for it.
Why does this itinerary skip Andasibe entirely?
Distance and direction. Andasibe sits east of Tana on the RN2, the RN7 corridor runs south, and combining both inside 6 days means either rushing the RN7 or cutting a day from Ranomafana or Isalo. This route spends the budget on RN7 depth instead, a genuine either/or given how slow and expensive backtracking through Tana would be.
