Day 1: Antananarivo, for Free
Land at Ivato, transfer into the city, and spend the afternoon on the Rova hill and through Analakely Market, both free. Early night, the RN7 push starts tomorrow.
Day 2: Antsirabe by Taxi-Brousse
Taxi-brousse south on the paved RN7, about 3.5 hours, a fraction of a hired car’s price for the same route. Afternoon pousse-pousse ride and a zebu-horn or gemstone workshop stop. Overnight at a budget guesthouse in Antsirabe.
Day 3: On to Ranomafana
The single longest leg of the trip, roughly 6 hours on the RN7. Taxi-brousse covers it, but splitting a shared 4x4 and driver-guide with one or two other travelers is genuinely the more realistic budget move on a route this long and this remote. Arrive by early evening, check into a lodge at the park edge.
Day 4: Ranomafana National Park
Full-day rainforest circuit with a mandatory MNP guide, confirm current entrance and guide fees at parcs-madagascar.com ; 13 lemur species live here, including the critically endangered greater bamboo lemur and the diademed sifaka. This is golden bamboo lemur territory, discovered here in 1986, a find that directly led to the park’s 1991 founding. Evening guided night walk turns up a genuinely different set of nocturnal species from the daytime circuit, worth the extra guide fee if your budget has any give left.
Day 5: Ranomafana to Isalo
Drive south on the RN7 toward Isalo, about 3 hours, via Anja Community Reserve near Ambalavao, a community-run reserve with the country’s highest concentration of ring-tailed lemurs and a noticeably cheaper entrance fee than any MNP park, roughly 8,000-25,000 MGA plus a modest community guide fee. Afternoon arrival at Isalo, settle in before the light fades. Overnight near the park.
Day 6: Isalo National Park
Full day on the Isalo circuit , the Canyon des Singes and the Piscine Naturelle, a natural spring-fed pool that’s the trip’s best free swim once you’re past the park entrance fee, are the headline stops. Ring-tailed lemurs and sifakas are common along the trail. Evening back at the lodge, pack for tomorrow’s drive and flight.
Day 7: Toliara and the Flight Home
Morning drive to Toliara, roughly 2-3 hours from Isalo, with time to see the southern RN7 terminus town before your flight. Why not push on to Tulear/Ifaty’s beaches since you’re already at the RN7’s end?
You’re close, but 7 days is the wrong length to add it properly on a budget; Ifaty deserves its own day or two of beach time, not a rushed afternoon squeezed before a flight. Budget 8-10 or more days if the beach extension matters as much as the parks do.
Is the Anja Community Reserve stop worth the extra time?
Yes, and it barely costs you any, since it sits right on the RN7 between Ranomafana and Isalo. It’s also genuinely cheaper than the bigger MNP parks, a community-founded and community-run reserve with ring-tailed lemur numbers that outdo anywhere else in the country.
Build one buffer day into your Toliara-Tana flight connection rather than a tight same-day international departure; the domestic flight is the one weak link in an otherwise well-paced, well-priced week.
