Johannesburg in 6 Days on a Budget

Safety first: Johannesburg has real crime risk (armed robbery, carjacking, smash-and-grab at red lights), but it isn’t a no-go city. Use Uber or Bolt instead of walking, especially downtown or after dark; take the Gautrain for the OR Tambo-Sandton-Pretoria run; keep car doors locked and stay alert at traffic lights; don’t display phones or valuables; and see Soweto and the inner city on a guided tour, not solo. Sandton, Rosebank, and Melville are the lower-risk side of the city. Check your own government’s current travel advisory before you go.
Six days adds a recovery day of green space and shopping to the standard history-Soweto-Cradle-Pretoria-Pilanesberg spine, useful after a full safari day. If five days is enough, use the 5-day itinerary ; with a seventh day, the 7-day itinerary adds an inner-city deep dive.

Day 1: Apartheid history
Morning: the Apartheid Museum, allow 2.5-3 hours (roughly R85-R120, verify). Afternoon: Constitution Hill’s Old Fort and Constitutional Court. Evening: dinner in Melville.
Day 2: Soweto, guided
Full day: a guided Soweto tour covering Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial. Evening: Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square.
Day 3: The Cradle of Humankind
Full day: the Cradle of Humankind, UNESCO-listed since 1999. Sterkfontein Caves reopened April 2025 after 2024 flooding; check current status (verify). Combo ticket with Maropeng runs roughly R175 (verify).
Day 4: Pretoria day trip
Morning: Gautrain to Pretoria, the Union Buildings and Voortrekker Monument. Afternoon: Freedom Park, jacarandas if you’re here around October. Evening: Gautrain back for dinner.
Day 5: Pilanesberg safari
Full day: a genuine malaria-free Big Five safari inside an extinct volcanic crater, unusually self-drivable in a standard rental car. Sun City sits next door for a future overnight trip.
Day 6: Green space and shopping
Morning: Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve (free, 700-plus hectares, zebra and wildebeest inside the metro) or the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden’s roughly 70m Witpoortjie Falls, a lighter pace after the safari. Go in a group and stick to marked trails.
Afternoon: shop for souvenirs at Rosebank Mall or a weekend market near the Rosebank Gautrain stop.
Evening: a relaxing final dinner in Melville or 44 Stanley, both walkable by day.
