Mandalay in 7 Days on a Budget (Costs)
Travel advisory: Both the US and UK governments warn against visiting. The US advises against all travel to Myanmar; the UK advises against all but essential travel to Mandalay and against all travel to Sagaing and the area north of the city. Fighting, drone attacks, curfews and internet shutdowns continue, and the March 2025 earthquake damaged many sites. Check the US State Department and UK FCDO before making any plans.
Read this before you plan a single day. Myanmar has been under military rule since the 1 February 2021 coup, with a civil war still ongoing; most governments advise against travel, and Sagaing Region, across the river from Mandalay, is one of the most active conflict zones in the country (Mandalay city itself is not risk-free, and this matters more once your days start including day trips). A M7.7 earthquake also struck the Sagaing-Mandalay area on 28 March 2025, and every ancient-capitals stop from Day 3 onward took real damage; verify current access site by site before relying on this plan. Check your government’s current advisory first. Some tourist spending here reaches the military, so favor small independent operators, and official advice currently recommends against travel. This itinerary describes Mandalay as it was, for if and when it is safe to visit.
Seven days is a slower version of the 6-day itinerary , same route through Day 6, with a final flex day added rather than another rushed sight. Expect roughly $15 to $45 a day depending on the day, lower on the flex day since it needs little transport.
Route Summary
Days 1 through 6 are identical to the 6-day plan: core sights, crafts and markets, Amarapura and Sagaing, Inwa on its own day, Mingun, then Pyin Oo Lwin. Day 7 is a deliberate rest and flex day back in Mandalay before departure, the point of taking a full week rather than cramming everything into six days.
Day 1: Mandalay’s Core Sights
- Morning: Mahamuni Pagoda, gold-leaf-covered Buddha image, men-only inner sanctum, roughly 4:30 to 5am face-washing ritual. Confirmed 2025 quake damage, verify current access.
- Midday: Kuthodaw Pagoda, street lunch for about $0.50 to $1.
- Afternoon: Shwenandaw Monastery, then the Mandalay Palace moat; the interior is a restricted military zone with 2025 gate and wall damage.
- Evening: Sunset from Mandalay Hill, free to climb.
- Status: Kuthodaw suffered serious structural damage in the 2025 quake, and the current condition and access of every Day 1 sight are unconfirmed.
Day 2: Crafts, Markets, and Tea Shops
- Morning: A gold-leaf workshop, then wood or marble carving, free to watch.
- Midday: Sandamuni and Kyauktawgyi Pagodas.
- Afternoon: Zegyo Market.
- Evening: Tea shop, milk tea and lahpet thoke.
- Status: The current condition and access of the workshops, pagodas and market are unconfirmed.
Day 3: Amarapura and Sagaing
- Morning: Amarapura’s U Bein Bridge, unverified 2025 status, don’t assume it’s intact. Mahagandhayon Monastery’s alms procession, whose current status is unconfirmed.
- Afternoon: Sagaing’s monastery ridge, near the epicenter, heavily damaged (disputed), hill-pagoda status unconfirmed. Sagaing lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel. Sagaing Region beyond the city is also an active conflict area, extra caution warranted.
- Evening: Return to Mandalay for dinner.
Day 4: Inwa (Ava), on Its Own Time
- Morning: Cross to Inwa by boat, then horse-cart. Historic sights include Bagaya Monastery, the leaning Nanmyint watchtower, and Maha Aungmye Bonzan.
- Afternoon: The hardest-hit ancient capital: roughly 75% of structures damaged, Maha Aungmye Bonzan reported nearly destroyed, access bridge collapsed. Verify current access once you’re there.
- Evening: Return to Mandalay, an easy dinner.
Day 5: Mingun by Boat
- Morning: Boat to Mingun (roughly once-daily ferry, historically 9:30am out and 1:30pm back; roughly 5,000 MMK boat plus 5,000 MMK entry, stale figures, verify). See the unfinished Mingun Pahtodawgyi stupa and the roughly 90-tonne Mingun Bell, unverified 2025 status. Mingun lies in Sagaing Region, where the UK advises against all travel.
- Midday: Hsinbyume (Myatheindan) Pagoda is reported “largely destroyed,” don’t expect it intact.
- Afternoon: Return to Mandalay, rest.
- Evening: Simple dinner near your guesthouse.
Day 6: Pyin Oo Lwin
- Morning: Travel roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road, or a scenic roughly 4-hour train, to Pyin Oo Lwin (verify current timing). Visit the National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens.
- Afternoon: The 1936 Purcell Clock Tower and, if time allows, Anisakan Falls. Pyin Oo Lwin lies in the area where the UK advises against all travel, rocket attacks have hit the town, and the current access of its sights is unconfirmed.
- Evening: Return to Mandalay for the night.
Day 7: A Flex Day Back in Mandalay
- Morning: Sleep in, then revisit whichever sight from Days 1 and 2 you liked best, at a different time of day, most Mandalay pagodas look and feel different in morning light than they did at sunset.
- Midday: Browse the 87th Street jade area if you skipped it earlier (window-shopping only is the lower-stakes choice given the ethics of Myanmar’s jade trade), or spend a longer, unhurried session in a tea shop.
- Afternoon: Last-minute Zegyo Market shopping, then pack.
- Evening: A final tea shop or noodle stall meal before your onward transport or flight.
