Two days: the zone pass, the e-bike, no balloon needed Two days covers Bagan’s core without a day trip or a splurge: the one-time zone fee, an e-bike, and roughly ten temples split across two days. Day 1 takes Old Bagan’s marquee sites; Day 2 goes deeper into Dhammayangyi and the quieter Myinkaba temples before a river sunset. Longer versions of this same plan, 3 days through 7 days , add a slower temple day, Mount Popa, Salay and a Mandalay extension.

Three days: the zone pass used in full, no rush Three days lines up neatly with the archaeological zone pass’s 3-day validity, so you use the whole thing without repaying. Four days: Bagan’s temples, then Mount Popa Four days is the point where Bagan itself, genuinely a 2-3 day place, gets its first regional day trip. Days 1-3 follow the 3-day plan exactly: the zone pass, the marquee temples, and a slower off-track day. Day 4 leaves the archaeological zone entirely for Mount Popa, so the 30,000 MMK pass from Day 1 still covers everything you needed it for. Longer plans, 5 through 7 days , add Salay and a Mandalay extension on top of this.

Five days: Bagan, Mount Popa and Salay Five days follows the 4-day plan exactly through Mount Popa, then adds a fifth day to Salay, a quieter riverside town south of Bagan that most 4-day trips skip. Days 1-3 stay inside the archaeological zone on the one 30,000 MMK pass; Days 4 and 5 both leave the zone for day trips, so no repayment is needed. Want Mandalay added too? Six days: Bagan, Mount Popa, Salay, then Mandalay Six days follows the 5-day plan through Salay, then uses the last day to move on to Mandalay rather than doubling back into Bagan’s temples. Seven days: Bagan, Popa, Salay, then a full Mandalay stop A full week follows the 6-day plan through Salay and the move to Mandalay, then adds a second Mandalay day instead of rushing back. Days 1-3 use the one 30,000 MMK zone pass on the temple plain itself, genuinely a 2-3 day place; Days 4-7 spend outside it, on Mount Popa, Salay and Mandalay, so the fee is never repaid across the whole week.

Bagan on a budget: where the money actually goes The one cost you cannot skip is the Bagan Archaeological Zone fee: 30,000 MMK per foreign visitor, valid for 3 consecutive days, paid in cash at the airport or a checkpoint. Everything past that is genuinely cheap: an e-bike day runs 8,000-10,000 MMK (about $3-5), a Nyaung-U guesthouse room starts around $7, and a full local meal is 2,000-6,000 MMK (about $1-2).
