Bagan in 7 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)
Seven days: Bagan, Popa, Salay, then a full Mandalay stop
A full week follows the 6-day plan through Salay and the move to Mandalay, then adds a second Mandalay day instead of rushing back. Days 1-3 use the one 30,000 MMK zone pass on the temple plain itself, genuinely a 2-3 day place; Days 4-7 spend outside it, on Mount Popa, Salay and Mandalay, so the fee is never repaid across the whole week. Shorter versions, 2 days through 6 days , trim from the end of this same spine. Cost detail lives in the Bagan budget guide .
Book these before you go:
- A Nyaung-U guesthouse room on Agoda for the first 5 nights, plus 2 Mandalay nights.
- Your Bagan-Mandalay transport (shared taxi/minibus, river boat or flight); the domestic flight schedule can thin to a couple a week, so book or confirm it early.
- Your Tourist e-Visa in advance; approval takes at least 3 working days and the visa allows up to 28 days in-country.

Day 1: Nyaung-U and the Old Bagan core
Pay the 30,000 MMK zone fee on arrival, ease in at Nyaung-U Market and Shwezigon Pagoda, then rent an e-bike for the afternoon at Ananda and Thatbyinnyu. Sunset is a free viewing mound by default; a dawn hot-air balloon (roughly $140-450) is the one splurge worth booking ahead if you’re doing it at all.
Day 2: Dhammayangyi, Myinkaba and a river sunset
Dhammayangyi first, then Sulamani and Htilominlo, a detour into quiet Myinkaba village, and a free sunset along the Ayeyarwady.
Day 3: Off the main tracks, and New Bagan
Wander smaller, unstaffed temples off the routes, then browse New Bagan’s lacquerware workshops in the afternoon.
Day 4: Mount Popa
About 1.5 hours from Bagan, this volcanic-plug pilgrimage site is reached by a covered staircase past resident macaques. Hire a taxi or shared tour for roughly $25-35 round trip; you’re outside the zone, so no extra fee applies.
Day 5: Salay
Roughly 35km south of Bagan and far quieter than Mount Popa. See Yokesone Kyaung, a roughly 130-year-old teak monastery closed on Mondays, and treat it as the local counterpart to Day 4.
Day 6: On to Mandalay
Travel by shared taxi or minibus (roughly 180km, 4-5 hours), the slow river boat, or a short flight if the thin schedule allows. Settle in and catch sunset at U Bein Bridge near Amarapura before dinner in the city.
Day 7: Mandalay, then depart
Spend the morning at Mahamuni Buddha Temple, one of Myanmar’s most revered pilgrimage sites, then Kuthodaw Pagoda, known for its hundreds of marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scripture. An afternoon walk or short climb up Mandalay Hill gives a last view over the city before you head to the airport; Mandalay has meaningfully better onward domestic and regional flight options than Nyaung-U, so ending the trip here instead of looping back to Bagan usually makes more sense.
Is a full week too long for Bagan and the surrounding region?
Not if the extra days go toward places outside the temple plain rather than repeating it. This plan spends exactly 3 days inside the paid archaeological zone, the honest amount of time Bagan’s temples themselves need, and puts the other 4 into Mount Popa, Salay and Mandalay, three genuinely different stops that round out a week without padding.
Is it responsible or safe to spend a full week in Myanmar right now?
The itinerary’s stops, Bagan, Mount Popa, Salay and Mandalay, are all calm, but Myanmar overall has been under military rule since 2021, and both the US State Department and the UK’s FCDO advise against travel to most of the country. A longer trip means more total spending inside Myanmar, so it’s worth being deliberate the whole week: favor small, local guesthouses, drivers and restaurants over crony-linked hotels and tour operators if you decide to go.
Buy your Mandalay-to-home flight or onward ticket before you commit to this full route; Mandalay’s better connections are the reason to end the week there rather than flying back out through Nyaung-U.
