Book these before you go:

Day 1: Nyaung-U and the Old Bagan core
Pay the 30,000 MMK zone fee on arrival, ease in at Nyaung-U Market and Shwezigon Pagoda, then rent an e-bike for Ananda and Thatbyinnyu in the afternoon. Sunset is a free viewing mound; if you’re splurging once on this trip, a dawn hot-air balloon flight (roughly $140-450 depending on operator) replaces this slot entirely and needs booking well ahead.
Day 2: Dhammayangyi, Myinkaba and a river sunset
Dhammayangyi first, then Sulamani and Htilominlo, a detour into quiet Myinkaba village, and a free sunset along the Ayeyarwady.
Day 3: Off the main tracks, and New Bagan
Wander smaller, unstaffed temples off the routes, then browse New Bagan’s lacquerware workshops.
Day 4: Mount Popa
About 1.5 hours from Bagan, this volcanic-plug pilgrimage site is reached by a covered staircase past resident macaques. Hire a taxi or shared tour for roughly $25-35 round trip, split among your group; you’re outside the zone, so no extra fee applies.
Day 5: Salay
Roughly 35km south of Bagan, about an hour to 90 minutes by road, and far quieter than Mount Popa. See Yokesone Kyaung, a roughly 130-year-old teak monastery closed on Mondays, and treat this as the local, less-touristed counterpart to Day 4.
Day 6: On to Mandalay
Get to Mandalay by shared taxi or minibus on the roughly 180km, 4-5 hour road, by the classic slow Ayeyarwady river boat if you have the extra time to spare, or by a short domestic flight if the thin schedule cooperates. Settle in and catch sunset at U Bein Bridge near Amarapura, the long teak footbridge that’s one of the most-photographed spots in the Mandalay area, before dinner in the city.
Is it worth adding Mandalay to a Bagan trip?
Yes, if you have a sixth day free; it’s a genuinely different city from Bagan, with its own royal-era sites and river life rather than more temple-plain scenery. Skip it if temples are the whole point of your trip, since the 5-day plan already covers Bagan, Mount Popa and Salay without the extra travel day.
Is it responsible or safe to travel between Bagan and Mandalay right now?
Both cities are under the same nationwide advisory picture: Myanmar has been under military rule since 2021, and both the US State Department and the UK’s FCDO advise against travel to most of the country, even though neither city is a front-line combat zone. Road and river routes between them are the normal way locals and tourists travel this corridor, but confirm current conditions closer to your trip rather than assuming nothing has changed since this was written.
