Melbourne in 3 Days on a Budget (Daily Costs)
Three days is the point where Melbourne’s free city core starts feeling complete: the laneways and MCG from a shorter trip, plus a full day for Fitzroy, Carlton and the gardens. Only one paid attraction sits on this whole plan, and it’s optional. Prefer a shorter or longer trip? See the 2-day , 4-day , 6-day or 7-day versions.
Book these before you go:
- Your ETA (subclass 601, ~$20 via the app) or eVisitor (subclass 651, free for EU/UK) - required before you fly, there’s no visa-free entry
- The St Kilda penguin viewing on Day 2, free but a timed reservation that books out
- Eureka Skydeck tickets for Day 3 (~$30-40) if you want the view - check the official site for current pricing
- Accommodation, especially around the AFL Grand Final (Sat 26 Sep 2026) or Melbourne Cup (Tue 3 Nov 2026) - compare rates on Booking.com
Day 1: Laneways, both NGVs and the Yarra
Walk the CBD laneway circuit: Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane for street art, Degraves Street and Centre Place for coffee, the 1892 Block Arcade and 1870 Royal Arcade for the older architecture - all free. Federation Square holds the free Ian Potter Centre/NGV Australia and the free ACMI moving-image museum; in the afternoon, cross to NGV International on St Kilda Road for the second, separate NGV building, also free. Finish along the Yarra River at Southbank.

In the afternoon, tram to St Kilda for the beach, the pier and Luna Park’s exterior (the world’s oldest continuously running amusement park), staying for the little penguins on the breakwater at dusk - free, reservation required.

Early afternoon, walk the free Royal Botanic Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance, both an easy stroll along St Kilda Road. Close the day at Eureka Skydeck (~$30-40) for the highest view in the city, or skip it and keep the day entirely free.

Is 3 days enough for Melbourne?
Three days covers the laneways, both NGV buildings, the MCG, St Kilda’s penguins, Fitzroy, Carlton and the gardens - most of the city’s real highlights. What’s missing is Brunswick, Richmond and Williamstown, which the 4-day itinerary adds, and any Victoria day trip, which belongs in Melbourne, Australia: Budget Day-Trip Base instead.
Do you need a car for this itinerary?
No. All three days run on foot, tram and the Free Tram Zone, with a Myki needed only for the St Kilda tram leg and any trip outside the CBD/Docklands grid.
For the wider free-and-cheap picture, see the Melbourne budget guide and check Melbourne’s essential facts .
One real cost-saver: skip Eureka Skydeck and climb nothing at all - the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens both give a free skyline view back toward the CBD, just from ground level instead of the 88th floor.
