Moscow Day Trips in 3 Days on a Budget
Three days adds Zvenigorod, cheaper and quieter than Sergiev Posad, to the one essential day trip. This builds on our 2-day version ; add a day and it becomes our 4-day itinerary , which brings in the Arkhangelskoye estate.

Day 1: Arrival and getting the money sorted
Land at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo and take the Aeroexpress into the center, roughly 500-650 RUB one-way depending on the airport, paid with cash or a MIR card since a foreign Visa or Mastercard will not process at the kiosk. Exchange cash (USD, EUR, or CNY) at a bank counter as soon as you can and budget generously for the whole trip rather than assuming a card will work somewhere. Many governments, including the US and UK, currently advise against travel to Russia, check your own government’s current advisory before booking any of this. Base yourself centrally, near a metro line, so both day trips below start with a short ride to the station rather than a cross-town trek first thing in the morning.

Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the cheapest Golden Ring day trip
Elektrichka and express trains leave Yaroslavsky Station roughly every 20-40 minutes, journey time 1h10 to 1.5 hours, fare roughly 200-320 RUB one-way, the cheapest of these five day trips by a wide margin and bought with cash at the station kiosk the morning you go. It’s a 10 minute walk from the station to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius, the most significant monastery in Russian Orthodoxy and the reason this is the Golden Ring’s essential single stop. The grounds are free to enter; a separate fee covers specific museum collections inside, confirm the current figure at stsl.ru before you go. Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, and carry a headscarf if you’re a woman planning to enter the churches, this is a working pilgrimage site rather than a museum with a relaxed dress code.
Day 3: Zvenigorod, the quieter and cheaper second stop
Zvenigorod is roughly an hour from central Moscow, home to the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and, oddly, a Museum of Russian Desserts. It costs less in both time and rubles than any of the other four day trips here, a good second monastery town once Sergiev Posad is done and you don’t want another long rail commitment. Getting there is a train-plus-local-transfer combination rather than the direct elektrichka you rode on day two, plan the connection before you leave rather than puzzling it out at the station.
Do you need to book any of these trains in advance?
Not for Sergiev Posad or Zvenigorod: elektrichka and local trains run frequently with no seat reservation needed, and tickets are bought same day with cash at the station or a kiosk. Advance booking adds little for either of these short hops.
Is Sergiev Posad worth it if it’s the only day trip you have time for?
Yes. It’s the cheapest and fastest of these five day trips, the round trip runs roughly 2.5-3 hours of train time against a full day out, and the Trinity Lavra is the single most historically significant monastery in Russian Orthodoxy. If a short trip only has room for one Golden Ring stop, this is it.
