Moscow Day Trips in 4 Days on a Budget

Day 1: Arrival and getting the money sorted
Land at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, or Vnukovo, take the Aeroexpress into the center (roughly 500-650 RUB, cash or MIR card only), and exchange cash early. Many governments, including the US and UK, currently advise against travel to Russia, check your own government’s current advisory before booking any of this. Western-issued Visa, Mastercard, and Amex cards do not work anywhere in Russia, a total block since March 2022, so budget for the whole trip’s cash needs rather than assuming you’ll top up along the way. Day 2: Sergiev Posad, the cheapest Golden Ring day trip
Elektrichka or express trains from Yaroslavsky Station, roughly every 20-40 minutes, roughly 1h10-1.5h, fare roughly 200-320 RUB one-way, cash only, the cheapest of these five day trips by a wide margin. Walk 10 minutes to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius; grounds free, a separate fee covers specific museum collections, confirm at stsl.ru . Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered.
Day 3: Zvenigorod, the quieter and cheaper second stop
Roughly an hour from central Moscow, the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and a Museum of Russian Desserts make for a lower-key day, costing less in both time and rubles than any of the other four day trips here. Plan the train-plus-local-transfer connection ahead rather than working it out at the station.
Day 4: Arkhangelskoye, the day trip where a car saves money
Arkhangelskoye is a late 18th century palace-and-park estate near Krasnogorsk, roughly 45 minutes to an hour out. Public transit here is thin enough that a car or an organized tour genuinely saves money once you count wasted time against a bus-and-walk combination that may not even get you a ticket: the official site, arhangelskoe.su , has shown online ticket sales as unavailable at times, so call ahead or plan to buy at the gate. Skip this one first if the budget or the schedule is already tight, it’s the one entry on this list that rewards spending a little more to save a day.
Do you need to book any of these trains in advance?
Not for Sergiev Posad, Zvenigorod, or Arkhangelskoye: elektrichka and bus tickets for those short hops are bought same day with cash at the station or a kiosk, and departures run often enough that advance booking adds little.
Do you need a car for any of these day trips?
No, and for most of them a car is the more expensive option. Trains cover Sergiev Posad and Zvenigorod well. Arkhangelskoye is the one exception here, where thin public transit makes a car or organized tour genuinely worth the extra cost rather than a false economy.
Is Sergiev Posad worth it if it’s the only day trip you have time for?
Yes. It’s the cheapest and fastest of these five day trips, the round trip runs roughly 2.5-3 hours of train time against a full day out, and the Trinity Lavra is the single most historically significant monastery in Russian Orthodoxy. If a short trip only has room for one Golden Ring stop, this is it.
