Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions a wider Oman road trip can reach, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat itself has not been hit and is operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.
The 5-day version: adding Sur to the loop
Five days adds Sur and its dhow yard to the 4-day loop (Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar, Wahiba Sands, Wadi Bani Khalid). Oman has no useful intercity rail, so a rental car carries the whole trip, and a 4x4 is required past Nizwa. Have a sixth day? See the 6-day loop , which adds Jebel Shams and the Ras al-Jinz turtles.
Book these before you go:
- A rental car via Discover Cars , confirm a 4x4 for Jebel Akhdar and the dunes
- A Wahiba Sands desert camp
- A Ras al-Jinz turtle reserve tour , permit and limited groups, book ahead
- Check the current advisory before you confirm any of the above; the situation is changing in 2026
| Day | Focus | Rough cost (solo, no hotel) |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Nizwa Fort and souq | OMR 5-8 (~$13-21), plus car |
| Day 2 | Bahla Fort, Jabrin Castle, Al Hamra, Jebel Akhdar | OMR 2-6 (~$5.20-16), plus car and lodging |
| Day 3 | Jebel Akhdar, drive to Wahiba Sands | Camp package varies, verify |
| Day 4 | Wahiba Sands, Wadi Bani Khalid, Sur | OMR 0-7 (~$0-18), plus car |
| Day 5 | Sur town, coast road back to Muscat | OMR 0-3 (~$0-8), plus car |
Day 1: Nizwa, the historic interior capital
Pick up your rental car at Muscat and drive roughly 1.5-2 hours (2WD is fine this far) to Nizwa. Climb Nizwa Fort (around OMR 5, about $13), then browse Nizwa Souq for silver, dates, and khanjar daggers. On a Friday, the goat market peaks 7:30-9:30am. Overnight in Nizwa.
Day 2: Bahla, Jabrin, Al Hamra, and up to Jebel Akhdar
Visit Bahla Fort, Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort (a modest entrance fee, verify), then Jabrin Castle for its painted ceilings, and the mud-brick village of Al Hamra and Misfat al Abriyeen, both free to wander. In the afternoon, drive up to Jebel Akhdar. A checkpoint at the base enforces 4x4-only, confirm your rental before you arrive. Overnight on the mountain, Alila Jabal Akhdar and Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdhar are the two named resorts up here, check current rates.
Day 3: Jebel Akhdar to the Wahiba Sands
Morning on the Saiq Plateau, rose-terraced villages (rose season late March-May), and Diana’s Point. Afternoon, descend and drive to the Wahiba Sands, dunes are 4x4-only, usually via a camp transfer. Overnight at a desert camp, Desert Nights Camp, 1000 Nights Camp, or Arabian Oryx Camp, with dune-bashing, a camel ride, and stargazing.
Day 4: Wadi Bani Khalid and on to Sur
Slow desert morning, then drive out via Wadi Bani Khalid, big accessible pools reached by a five-minute paved walk, no hike required. Continue to Sur, about 3 hours by 2WD. If you want the turtles, the Ras al-Jinz reserve runs strictly guided night sessions (permit, limited groups, no artificial light, around OMR 7 for adults, about $18.20, book ahead), staying near the reserve lets you catch an evening session before overnighting.
Day 5: Sur town and the coast road back
Spend the morning at Sur, the working traditional dhow-building yard and Al Ayjah across the inlet. Drive the coast road back to Muscat, stopping at Wadi Shab (a short boat crossing, about OMR 1, around $2.60, and a 45-minute walk to the canyon pools) or the Bimmah Sinkhole, whichever your schedule allows. Return your rental car in Muscat and fly out.
How much does 5 days in Oman cost?
Figure roughly OMR 7-24 (about $18-62) for entries and the turtle tour across the five days, plus the rental car, the desert camp package (verify current pricing), and OMR 15-25 a night (about $39-65) for budget rooms along the way.
Book the 4x4 rental, the desert camp, and the turtle tour ahead, all three tighten up on weekends, and recheck the current US State Department or UK FCDO advisory closer to your travel date rather than trusting the booking-time version.
