Melbourne in 5 Days: Budget + Day Trips
Five days adds Phillip Island’s penguins to the 4-day city-plus-day-trips build, giving you the three signature Victoria experiences - coast, wine, wildlife - alongside a fast but genuinely free city start. The Great Ocean Road still runs as a single day here; for the fuller 2-day version, see the 7-day itinerary . Shorter trip? See the 2-day , 3-day or 4-day versions.
Book these before you go:
- Your ETA (subclass 601, ~$20 via the app) or eVisitor (subclass 651, free for EU/UK) - required before you fly
- A Great Ocean Road day tour for Day 3, on GetYourGuide , or a rental car via Discover Cars
- Phillip Island Penguin Parade tickets for Day 5 (~$33) - these sell out, book ahead
- Accommodation - compare rates on Booking.com
Day 1: Laneways, both NGVs and the Yarra
The CBD laneway circuit (Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Degraves Street, Centre Place, the 1892 Block Arcade and 1870 Royal Arcade), all free. Federation Square’s free Ian Potter Centre/NGV Australia and ACMI, then NGV International on St Kilda Road, also free. Finish along the Yarra at Southbank.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Laneways, both NGV buildings, ACMI | Free |
| Yarra River, Southbank | Free |
Day 2: MCG, Queen Victoria Market and St Kilda
Walk the MCG for free, or add the tour and Australian Sports Museum for around $38. Queen Victoria Market (since 1878) is free to browse. Tram to St Kilda for the beach, pier and Luna Park’s exterior. Save the penguin viewing for Phillip Island later this week rather than St Kilda’s breakwater, since you’ve already got Day 5 booked for it.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| MCG self-guided walk, Queen Victoria Market | Free |
| MCG tour + Sports Museum | ~$38 (optional) |
Day 3: Great Ocean Road (single-day version)
Roughly 3 hours inland or 4 hours along the coast, one way, to the Twelve Apostles. A single day is a genuine ~12-hour round trip - koalas at Kennett River and Loch Ard Gorge are the two stops worth prioritising. A bus day-tour handles the driving; self-driving gives more flexibility but commits you to the full distance both ways.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Self-drive fuel (split across group) | Varies, check current fuel prices |
| Bus day-tour | Varies, check current tour pricing |
Day 4: Yarra Valley
About 1h15 from the city by car or tour, and a true day trip - no overnight needed. Wine cellar-door tastings sit alongside Healesville Sanctuary’s native wildlife. Self-driving costs only fuel; a guided tour takes the driving off your hands.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Self-drive fuel (split across group) | Varies, check current fuel prices |
| Guided day tour | Varies, check current tour pricing |
| Wine tastings, Healesville Sanctuary entry | Varies by venue |
Day 5: Phillip Island
About 1.5-2 hours from the city, and car or guided tour only - there’s no bus service that reaches the Penguin Parade itself. The little penguins come ashore at dusk, which means a late return regardless of how you get there. Tickets run around $33 and sell out, so book ahead rather than turning up on the day.

| Penguin Parade tickets | ~$33 |
Is 5 days enough for Melbourne and Victoria?
Five days gets you the city plus all three signature Victoria day trips - coast, wine, wildlife - though the Great Ocean Road is still a rushed single day at this length. If you want that trip split into 2 days/1 night without cutting anything else, the 7-day itinerary has the room for it, plus the Dandenongs or Ballarat on top.
Do you need a car for this itinerary?
Days 1-2 need none. Days 3-5 each need either your own car or a booked tour - none of the Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley or Phillip Island has a practical public-transport option.
For the full Victoria-base picture, see Melbourne, Australia: Budget Day-Trip Base and check Melbourne’s essential facts .
One real cost-saver: book Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade tickets the same day you book your flights, not the week before - the late-return timing makes them the one booking on this list that genuinely sells out.
