Melbourne in 3 Days: Budget + Day Trips
Three days gives you two proper city days plus Victoria’s marquee day trip, the Great Ocean Road. Being honest about it upfront: a single day out to the Twelve Apostles and back is a genuine ~12-hour push, not a relaxed drive. If your schedule can stretch, the 4-day or 7-day versions let you split it into 2 days/1 night instead. Want to skip the road trip and just do the city? See the 3-day city itinerary .
Book these before you go:
- Your ETA (subclass 601, ~$20 via the app) or eVisitor (subclass 651, free for EU/UK) - required before you fly
- A Great Ocean Road day tour for Day 3 if you’re not self-driving, on GetYourGuide , or a rental car via Discover Cars
- Accommodation - compare rates on Booking.com
Day 1: Laneways, both NGVs and the Yarra
The CBD laneway circuit (Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Degraves Street, Centre Place, the 1892 Block Arcade and 1870 Royal Arcade), all free. Federation Square’s free Ian Potter Centre/NGV Australia and ACMI, then NGV International on St Kilda Road, also free. Finish along the Yarra at Southbank.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Laneways, both NGV buildings, ACMI | Free |
| Yarra River, Southbank | Free |
Day 2: MCG, Queen Victoria Market and St Kilda
Walk the MCG for free, or add the tour and Australian Sports Museum for around $38. Queen Victoria Market (since 1878) is free to browse. Tram to St Kilda for the beach, pier and Luna Park’s exterior, staying for the penguins at dusk - free, reservation required.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| MCG self-guided walk, Queen Victoria Market | Free |
| MCG tour + Sports Museum | ~$38 (optional) |
| St Kilda penguins at dusk | Free, reservation required |
Day 3: Great Ocean Road (the rushed single-day version)
The drive is roughly 3 hours inland or 4 hours along the coast, one way, to the Twelve Apostles. Doing it as a single day means an early start and a late return - koalas at Kennett River and Loch Ard Gorge are the two stops worth prioritising if time is tight. A bus day-tour handles the driving and the schedule for you; self-driving gives more flexibility but means committing to the full distance both ways in one day.
| Item | Cost (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Self-drive fuel (split across group) | Varies, check current fuel prices |
| Bus day-tour | Varies, check current tour pricing |
Is 3 days enough for the Great Ocean Road?
Technically yes, but not comfortably. A single day is a real ~12-hour push there and back, and you’ll see the Twelve Apostles and one or two stops rather than the full coastline. If the Great Ocean Road is the main reason for your trip, the 4-day itinerary or 7-day itinerary both allow room to split it into 2 days with an overnight instead.
Do you need a car for this itinerary?
Days 1-2 need none. Day 3 needs either your own car or a booked bus tour - there’s no practical public-transport option for the Great Ocean Road.

One real cost-saver: if you’re on the fence about a single rushed day versus an overnight, price the overnight first - splitting one night’s accommodation against not having to do a 12-hour round trip often changes the decision.
