Slovenia in 5 Days: Ljubljana, the Lakes, the Soca Valley, and a Karst Cave

Five days covers Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, a full day over the Vrsic Pass in the Soca Valley, and one of the Karst caves on the drive back, comfortably and without rushing. Currency is the euro (Slovenia is in the EU, Schengen, and the eurozone), and this is not Slovakia; the two countries do not share a border, and this one sits between Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia.

The route: Day 1 Ljubljana, Day 2 Bled, Day 3 Bohinj, Day 4 the Vrsic Pass into the Soca Valley, Day 5 a Karst cave on the way back. Have a fourth day only? The 4 day itinerary stops after the Soca Valley. Have a sixth? The 6 day itinerary adds Piran and the coast.

Book these before you go:

Day 1: Ljubljana

Walk the car-free old town and Ljubljana Castle above it; walking up is free, the castle ticket is EUR15 adult. Casual lunch runs EUR8-14; dinner for two with wine rarely tops EUR50-60.

Day 2: Lake Bled

45-60 minutes from Ljubljana. The pletna boat to the island church is EUR20 round trip per adult, cash only; Bled Castle is EUR19 adult. Vintgar Gorge (EUR15, April-October only, hourly timed slots, 245-person cap) is an easy add-on with a car.

Day 3: Lake Bohinj

30km past Bled, 25-40 minutes further, the bigger and quieter of Slovenia’s two lakes, inside Triglav National Park. The Vogel cable car is EUR28 return adult; skip it and the day costs almost nothing beyond food and lodging.

Day 4: Over the Vrsic Pass to the Soca Valley

Bohinj to Bovec runs about 112km via the Vrsic Pass, 50 hairpins, budget 2-3 hours driving plus real stop time. New for 2026, a free shuttle runs the pass 1 June-30 September with no summit parking allowed. Once in Bovec or Kobarid, rafting the Soca runs EUR64-90 per person plus a separate river permit (roughly EUR3-6), and the Kobarid Museum on the WWI Isonzo Front is EUR6 adult.

Day 5: Skocjan Caves (or Postojna)

Kobarid to the Skocjan Caves runs roughly 2 hours; Bovec to Postojna Cave is closer to 1h45. Both are Karst-region cave systems near Divaca, about 19km apart, and worth being precise about since they are genuinely different visits with different, non-interchangeable prices.

Skocjan Caves, UNESCO-listed since 1986, is EUR24 adult (peak season), walked on foot through an enormous collapsed doline and underground river canyon, with fixed guided-tour departure times, book ahead in summer. Postojna Cave is EUR34.90 adult, the bigger, more commercial system with an electric train doing most of the work, easier for families or anyone with mobility limits, and sits 9km from Predjama Castle (EUR24 alone) if adding that too. On a budget trip covering only one cave, Skocjan is the better single experience for a traveler who does not mind walking; Postojna is the right call with young kids or if the castle is part of the plan. From Divaca, Ljubljana Airport is about an hour, an easy last-morning drive.

Is Skocjan or Postojna the better use of a budget day?

Skocjan, for most travelers. It is the UNESCO-listed natural wonder of the two, walked rather than ridden, EUR24 adult against Postojna’s EUR34.90, and generally considered less touristed. Postojna earns its higher price with an electric train through the cave and Predjama Castle next door, genuinely the easier choice for young kids or limited mobility, but on ticket cost alone Skocjan wins for a budget itinerary.

Do you need a car for a 5 day Slovenia trip?

Yes, effectively. Public transport between Bled, Bohinj, the Soca Valley, and the Karst caves is thin and needs multiple connections; a car turns the same route into a single easy loop. The mandatory e-vinjeta motorway toll, bought at evinjeta.dars.si , is EUR16 for the cheapest weekly pass covering this whole trip (fines run EUR300-800 without one), on top of EUR18-32 a day off-peak. Confirm the vignette is included in writing at pickup.
