3 days adds a museum and a taste of the forest to Trondheim’s core
This builds on the same 2-day core, Nidaros Cathedral and Bakklandet, and uses the extra day for one museum and a cheap tram ride into Bymarka rather than a rushed day trip. If a day trip is what you actually want, the 4-day itinerary adds Stiklestad on top of this exact core.
Day 1: Nidaros Cathedral and Midtbyen
Start at Nidaros Cathedral, the world’s northernmost medieval cathedral, built over St. Olav’s grave; entry runs roughly NOK 120-150 (verify), with a separate summer-only tower climb around NOK 70. The Archbishop’s Palace next door holds the Norwegian crown regalia on its own ticket. Spend the rest of the day on foot around Midtbyen and the Torvet.

Day 2: Bakklandet, Kristiansten, and Munkholmen
Cross the 1681 Gamle Bybro into Bakklandet, free to wander, and see the Trampe bicycle lift (1993) at Brubakken. Climb to Kristiansten Fortress for free views, then take the summer ferry from Ravnkloa to Munkholmen island (roughly NOK 95, verify), a former Viking-age execution site, monastery, and state prison. Lunch dockside at Ravnkloa.

Day 3: Rockheim and a Bymarka taste on the Gråkallbanen
Spend the morning at Rockheim, Norway’s national museum of pop and rock music in a converted harborside grain warehouse, roughly NOK 130-200 (verify). In the afternoon, ride the Gråkallbanen, the world’s northernmost tram, from the centre to Lian in about 21 minutes for the price of an ordinary fare, and walk the easy trails around the terminus for a taste of Bymarka forest without committing a full hiking day to it.

Should you add Ringve or Sverresborg instead?
If music history or open-air folk museums interest you more than Bymarka, swap the tram ride for Ringve Music Museum (roughly NOK 130-200, verify, combined with Rockheim for about NOK 230-245) or the Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum, built around Norway’s oldest medieval castle ruins. Book Rockheim or Ringve tickets online the morning of, not the night before; neither sells out, but online booking is faster than a ticket counter queue on a short trip.
